Blue October w/ Ours
3.28.2009 - Knitting Factory - Spokane, WA

pink novemberPink November

“Yeah Hi, I’m Pink November I was the opening act” as I walked around the Knitting Factory with a hot pink wig on my head. I didn’t know that I would be attending the Blue October show with Matt , I was just in the assumption that I would meet up with him for the Wig Bash 09 (don’t even get me started on the Wig’s at Wig Bash.) Anyhow it was really awkward walking up the ramp to the Knitting Factory wearing pink because a)most of the crowd was wearing black including the men wearing black eye liner and b) kids spray painted their hair blue because the band’s called Blue October; so I stood out like Britney Spears at a rock a show.

oursMatt had a Meet and Greet to do for the radio station  at the same time as his photo shoot of the first band Ours, so we were a little bummed we didn’t get to see the bands full set because they sounded good. I told Matt I would find his guests for the M&G while he shot the first three songs. When the first kid arrived he had his plus one and three other kids with him. He begged please can I bring them back, and I had to say no due to limited space. Then the head security guy at the Knitting Factory (who is known as “Big Ed”) brought over two high school girls that were hard core Blue October fans. Making small talk one of the comments “Like a Boss” and instantly Matt starts to sing the rest of the song (um, hello were big fans of The Lonely Island) plus Matt likes to roll “Like a Boss.” When Matt got back from his photo shoot no one else had shown up so Matt told the first kid that he could grab two of his friends to bring back. It was really cute because they all wanted to come back really bad and in order to make it fair they Rock, Paper, Scissored to see who got to go. After waiting a little bit longer our group, Big Ed’s guests, and another group went up to meet the band. The band was cool during the M&G; we all got posters for them to sign. The last member of the band to come, the guitar player, wore his grandmothers ring around his neck I thought that was super cool because I thought it was his wife’s but it was his grandmas– very sweet. The M&G was quick, and the best part was Matt gave his poster to the four kids for their one friend who didn’t get to come back. I am pretty sure he made those kid’s night.

blue octoberThe Blue October background was awesome, it was the cover of their new album “Approaching Normal”… which is a window with a little girl on the other side. They made the window huge on a screen and added real curtains, it looked sharp. They had these cool blue light pillars too during the stage set up. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting them to sound as good as they did. The three songs I saw were amazing; they sound great and their new songs fucking rock live. I have the new CD in my car and I am actually pretty stoked to listen to it now. Their set sounded way better than when I hear their music on the radio, they are a great live band I was honestly impressed. I was a little bummed we had another concert/shoot to go to because we would’ve stayed but we had to go… but when they do tour again I will be there wearing a blue wig so I don’t stand out too much and make sure we are not double booked that night so we can see the entire show.
