Finn Riggins, Disco Doom & Built to Spill
Saturday, November 21st at the Knitting Factory

finn rigginsIt was hoot to see Finn Riggins open up at the Built to Spill Show! I can’t get “Wake” out of my head; even as I was running in circles at the gym today I just can’t stop whoahing. It’s contagious! Their music is bright and characteristic. There isn’t a single song where I am thinking “get this over with!” I could just dance to my own tune to Finn Riggins and adore every second of it. They have fun on stage and are extremely talented musicians that aren’t afraid to step out of the circle or box (if you wish). They were the liveliest band of the night by far.

disco doomSwitzerland’s Disco Doom took over the stage for the last time on this tour. They took over with their light electronic discotheque rock tunes. The crowd seemed to be digging them. They were a little pissed off at the sound guy for not letting them take time to do a sound check. I think they called him something like an octo-pussy if I heard right. They wanted their last night on the tour to be good. The crowd was dancing and jumping around. Built to Spill joined them for their last song and they seemed pleased with how their set ended. It was cool to see all of them on stage playing together.

built to spillBuilt to Spill. Everyone is going to hate me for saying this but… IT WAS BORING. And I am a Built to Spill fan; I get who they are and what they do! I know it’s not upbeat music, but I saw them at Sasquatch and the set was great it was quick and rocking, because they had a time limit. For some reason tonight every song was dragged out into a jam-ish kind of feel. It was tedious. Maybe I had to be stoned to get it, I don’t know but I needed a couch because I wanted to fall asleep. The set sounded great and we got to hear a few jams but no “Car,” “Center of the Universe,” or “Hindsight.” Hindsight is even off their September release. I am sure the die hard Built to Spill fans heard a few hits but I was just expecting the set to be a bit more buoyant. It was cool to see, beside the fact that I was fed-up but hopefully kids enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing them again at a Festival.
