Campfire Series at the Caterina Winery Friday, July 10th

Burnin' For You

Once again I found myself sitting outside the Caterina Winery on a warm summer night by the fire. When I arrived the seats were filled full of local musicians and people there to enjoy live music. I glanced around and saw Kim Wescott, Henry Nordstrom and his fellow guitar player, Mon Cheri (minus Caroline), Dane Ueland, the bass player form Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful I think his name is AJ, another gentlemen on violin, and a kid with a cool hat named Jacob on guitar. The concrete floor was covered in beer bottles, wine glasses, and all of their instruments which included a mandolin, stand up bass, harmonica, glockenspiel, violin, viola, guitars, tambourine, bongo, maracas, and a kid drumming on the floor with drumsticks. All together this plethora of musicians and instruments swept me off my feet with a night full of relaxed fun music.

Not only were their musicians playing but Justin Knittel and his darling little puppy Buckley (huge hit with the ladies), Matthew Winters, and a few other familiar faces were hanging out. Once you step into the Spokane music scene a few times "get your feet wet," you get to know the crowd (both concert goers and musicians) and I love it. Everyone is so kind and passionate about music, Spokane has a handful of wonderful talent that needs to be noticed more. Patrick's delightful mix known as the mimosa was another huge hit, if you have never been to a show at the Caterina nor enjoyed a glass of mimosa put it on your to-do list. So the most memorable moments from Friday night, which was one of the best local shows I have been to all year were... singing Outkast's "Hey-Ya" acoustic style, everyone chiming in during "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer, Patrick from Mon Cheri guiding the audience through "Across the Universe," all the boys in the group singing "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper, and Kim & Patrick looking up the lyrics to a Bon Iver song on a iphone. They knew how to play the song but needed a little help from technology with the lyrics.

It was amazing to me how one by one everyone was able to pick up the notes and chords, even with a little guidance from Dane and Kurt singing chords during the songs. All of the different musicians were able to play together and sound on tune, which is amazing for not rehearsing as a whole. Each musician just picked it up and joined right in, the audience got to even hop in and play some instruments. It really showed off the groups talent. We were also treated with a taste of everyone's original tunes, it was funny to hear other artists ask them once they were done "....oo you wrote that, I love that song." What happened Friday night was a night of music that won't ever be created just like that again. It was bursting of talent, laughter, good drinks, and fun. If I could, I would do it every Friday night.
