The Dutchess and The Duke & The Cave Singers
Thursday, February 25th at The Empyrean

dutchess and dukeI got the last ticket to the show at 7:58pm at the Empyrean – Sold Out. Twelve dollars, two Seattle bands, Empyrean, Full House; every seat was taken and every nook filled it was warm and a bit loud. People were begging to get in. I eagerly moved as close as I could to be stopped at the sound board when The Dutchess and the Duke started. They broke their guitar. So they played the entire set unplugged – no microphones no nothing. Their set was them sitting on the edge of the stage with two guitars and a bottle of wine. Sounds perfect and intimate right?

NOT. I am sorry but let’s go over this again – over 100 kids in a large long spacious room. Why would you play unplugged. Get the vibe you are going for there dutch and duke but that is rude – even when it was quite standing at the sound board I COULDN’T HEAR YOU. What is the point? What a waste. I will tell you everyone behind me was just as disappointed. To hear so much hype about your band and to be so excited to see you, but I was let down; major bummer. I ask that the next time you decide to play unplugged make sure your audience is under thirty people or in a smaller room. Thanks.

I saw the Cave Singers last time they were in town at the old Empyrean and I feel in love with this band. They move my soul with their rich earthy indie folk tunes. My feet are never still as I try to keep up with this Seattle three-piece. Before they took the stage, people were sitting on the dance floor and really anywhere they could find a seat. The second Pete graced his mouth to the microphone he said lets stand up and try out some new dance moves. (Yay!)

the cave singersI think of two things when I think of the Cave Singers. One; running through a field of daisies on a bright summer day with birds floating above me and luscious clouds in a blue sky – in the hands of mother nature. Two: A kitten licking my hand because their music is so heavenly and sweet yet it’s rough kind of like a sandpaper tongue. The band is great live, moving with the music when the play. It’s almost impossible to not move along with them. Towards the end of the night they were practically playing in the dark and once again they were brittle and beautiful. It was a great set and I can’t wait to see them again and again and again.

Thank you Henry for letting me stand in the soundboard box to take a few photos, I appreciate it. Kim Wescott YOU ROCK for showing me a few tricks on the G10. I am not sure which photos I took or you took so I would like to credit Kim Wescott as the photographer. Thank You! Matt was in Nashville and I am still learning camera’s there is A LOT to these little machines.
