It will blow your mind
Let me tell ya how interesting it is when you put screaming punk rock kids in an elegant winery known as the Caterina. I am surprised the wine glasses didn't burst into pieces from the loud musical sounds that came from Jedediah the Pilot, Loom, and Cyrus Fell Down. Not once have I seen so much sweat fly off the bodies of artists at a show. I was impressed and it was something I wasn't expecting on Monday, April 6th.
The night started off with what I thought was Small Town Nation but actually was Jedediah the Pilot – Ta Da they share the same Drummer! Before they started to play the guitar player from STN was like “it will blow your mind.” Alright, here's the thing it blew my ear drums... but it was way fucking awesome. I was expecting pop punk but it was more of a metal scream-o sound with these really cool keyboard breakdowns and vocals bouncing between the keyboard player and guitar player. The band also DIY'ed it and made very bright light boxes that added another cool effect to their show. My favorite part of their set was their trilogy titled “Oracle.” It starts with this creepy keyboard part and slowly evolves into a metal work of art – it was a very long song and it was amazing that they could play that long, and still go 100 miles per hour. They ended their set with “This is our last song, thanks for not calling us assholes,” I thought that was really funny and you need to check these kids out but bring earplugs!
Next up were the Salt Lake City kids known as LOOM. I was overhearing a conversation and I didn't know this but Loom is know for having a great light show... and wow their light show was the best I have seen this year! It was dark in the Caterina and as soon as this five-piece band started to play the colors went from red to blue to flashing strobes, it was visually pleasing. The badass chic on the violin was amazing, you could hear the violin throughout the set ... this girl tore it to shreds. I am honestly surprised she didn't break any strings on her bow. The violin really made the band stand out to me, other than the lights. Most of the time when you have a violinist, they are just a little added feature on one song for a punk band – not the case here. It was also awesome to watch the shadow of the main singer's hair just fly around as he was rockin' out. Loom is awesome, they are musically talented and I think it's something fresh for the hardcore punk scene. This was their third night on their 12 week tour and it sounded great and loud! Check out the bands Myspace and see if they are stopping by your town, if so go check it out.
Cyrus Fell Down was the last band to play, and this was my second time seeing them. I am just so amazed that this band isn't recognized on a national level. I have never heard or seen something like them, I don't know how many times I can say that. Their bass player just puts every bit of energy and life he has into his instrument. The drummer and the singer do the same, the three of their bodies are moving so fast and their hands are playing the instruments even faster. Matt has got me hooked on their song “Church Clothes,” you should give it a listen on their Myspace. It's hard for me to explain their sound, it's really cool different music that's a new take on everyday punk rock. Check this band out live and tell all of your friends, they are a fun band to see live! As Matt said “It's just another night of really cool music that people miss out on.” So look up these bands and don't be one of those people that miss these great live shows, save up a couple of bucks and get ready to have some fun.
