The English Beat
4.1.2009 - Knitting Factory - Spokane, WA

english beatBeats!

“The last time we were hear I told everyone to bring a friend, the one or two you have…” the crowd chuckles. Matt chimes in “I brought a friend…I brought you (he said to me).” This was my first English Beat concert, Matt saw them once before with Dave and they said they had a blast! I must say the show was a lot of fun; the band was full of energy and had huge smiles it was like a punk ska big band. In fact that was the first time I have seen so many people dancing on the floor at the Knitting Factory, there were more people dancing there then there have been at the Knitting Factory dance night. People of all ages were taping their feet, moving their heads, and evening drumming on the tables or side rails. For being such a rainy day outside the band brought in smiles and warmth with their music. They opened their set with Rough Rider, and soon after commented “this will be one of the best dance party’s you’ll go to all year… get ready to lose 20 pounds…  everybody skank.” I was having a rough day and the show helped, it was hard not to smile when you are surrounded by people having a great time! The band consisted of guitars, singing, bass guitar, a horn, keyboard, drums, clapping hands, and snapping fingers. They were even celebrating 30 years and 1 day of making music, and commented that they wish to go another 30 – I hope they do. The English Beat has the beat, and it was a great way to start the month of April and spring. Check out these UK guys when you can and be prepared to skank or dance if you wish.
