Karli Fairbanks, Emma Hill and Brittain Ashford
Sunday, June 21st at The Rocket Market

Party OFF The Patio

Last Sunday, I had the distinct pleasure of going to the Rocket Market on the South Hill for “Sundays with Som” to celebrate the first day of summer. The weather however had other plans and the rain set the tone for some pretty good music.

First up: Brittain Ashford from Brooklyn, New York. Brittain played a solo set with an autoharp and her sweet voice blends with the instrument nicely. Her talent as a singer-songwriter was remarkable.

The second group of the evening was Emma Hill & Her Gentleman Callers from Portland, Oregon.  Performing as a three-piece, she along with Charlie Fischer on bass and Bryan Daste on pedal steel, wove a very cool country vibe. The band conjured up a steel guitar-blessed siren call through the desert Southwest with songs like “Highway 101” and “Midnight Phone Call.” They were on Day 3 of a six week tour and by the sounds of what I heard, the folks who catch them down the line are definitely in for a music treat.

Headliner Karli Fairbanks then took the stage to a standing-room-only crowd. I was very impressed by her flat-picking style and her charming, pretty voice. Her grace as a song-writer shows the depth of her talent. I particularly liked “Whiskey Flowers” and the story behind the song.

“Sundays with Som” at the Rocket Market: Come early, stay late, enjoy.

P.S. Buy some organic vegetables.
