K.D. Lang w/ The Wood Brothers
3.21.2009 - The Fox Theater - Spokane, Wa

K.D. Rocks The Foxthe wood brothers

Saturday night K.D. Lang came to the FOX Theater in Spokane for the first time since 1985, that was before I was born and on that note I was the youngest person there by far. The Wood Brothers opened up for the night and they were extremely talented brothers from Georgia and upstate New York. One played the guitar and sang while the other rocked a harmonica and a stand up bass. It is always a treat to see someone talented play a stand up bass because it is such a physical instrument. The one brother was working it up and down, and I was up in the back balcony and could still see how both of his hands were all over the strings. The brothers sounded like they came right out of the mountains with a rustic blues sound and appeal. Right after they played their last song, they went out to their merch table to greet guests which is very kind of them.

As soon as K.D. Lang took the stage everyone went nuts, which is funny because everyone I talked to said the same thing “Yeah, I mentioned I was going to K.D. Lang and my friends were like… who?” Well, there seems to be a following in the area because the stunningly gorgeous FOX Theater was 95% full of her fans who knew all of her songs. I liked how when K.D. Lang was on stage she still interacted with the audience as they would yell things like “you are beautiful” or “your amazing” or even requesting songs over all the hooting and hollering. Even though I was surrounded by people old enough to by my parents or grandparents theywere a lighthearted happy crowd and thrilled to be at the show. At one point K.D. stops and starts tosay … I was wondering why at my age I seem K.D. Langto surround myself with such beautiful young men and then she directs her hands to the five gentlemen behind her. K.D. Lang’s backing band was awesome; her guitar player was from Brazil while one gentlemen rocked a piano, keyboard, and accordion, another also played a stand up bass, one man was on the drums, and the last man rocked the steel guitar and even invented one instrument he named the “Singing Organ,” and those aren’t even all the instruments they guys played.

Before K.D. Lang got to announce her piano/accordion player she went straight to the point that he was three when her first album came out and that his shiny belt buckle was the only area of interest on him causing the crowd to burst into giggles – but that she loved him dearly. K.D. Lang did a cool cover of Leonard Cohan’s “Hallelujah” that got her a standing ovation. Between the six of them working together on stage, K.D.’s  barefoot dancing, cool lights, and an extremely pleased crowd the show ended up being really good. At the end of her set she got her second standing ovation, as she thanked the crowd and left the stage. Check out all the photos from the show HERE!
