Mat Kearney with Vedera
Friday, October 30th at the Knitting Factory

Mat KearneyVedera opened up with night with sugary sweet female vocals. It was a good set change between the too. The music mixed well together. The coolest part about the Vedera set was hearing Kristen May cover the Smashing Pumpkins. The crowd was digging her set and there was a good energy going into Mat Kearney.

If you are looking for a male singer to win over your heart with charming lyrics, smooth vocals, and a guitar; Mat Kearney is your guy. The Knitting Factory was full of girls ages twelve to sixty and a handful of boyfriends or husbands. It is “Undeniable” that he is talented. On stage he seemed comfortable, relaxed, yet still happy to be playing in Spokane . I say that he is popular with the ladies but at the same time when I glanced at any male in the room they were singing along too.

The stage set up was simple but really cool. He had regular sized light bulbs that were on strands of Christmas lights then a few big lights as well. Mat had his piano on stage but off to the side so he could stand up and play the guitar too. My favorite aspect about the stage other then the lights was the big marching band bass drum that was set up on a stand and was used in a few songs. It was really cool; I have never seen a drum used like that before.

mat kearneyMat has catchy songs that people can relate too and are easy to listen too. I want to classify him as rock because when you see him with a live band that is what it feels like. Though if I catch myself singing along to “Close to Love” in the car I would say it is somewhat pop music. Either way, he has clear vocals and makes music that is appropriate for a lot of people. It makes sense that the Knitt was full, he put on a good set and I am sure he made a few girls night.
