Gun of the Sun, Head Like A Kite, No-Fi Soul Rebellion
Friday, June 5th at the Caterina Winery

gun of the sunFeel The Beats

Friday June 5th was not only a night full of electronic beats, but it was also First Friday. It’s cool to walk up to the Caterina Winery and see folks of all ages outside sipping wine while local artists Nore and Jason Corocoran were displaying their art, and actually painting inside. Their colorful works decorated the Caterina Walls with skulls, jelly fish, a cat & mouse, bumble bees and so much more.

When we arrived Gun of the Sun was spinning beats and rapping. It was a new experience to hear hip-hop at the Caterina, it was different, but fun. I was very impressed with their ability to speak at a speed like they did and just put one word after another while telling you a story. I have a huge respect for talented rappers because it takes a lot of experience to be able to flow smoothly and intelligence to be able to rhyme and order words correctly. I hope we get to experience more hip-hop every now and then at the Caterina.

head like a kiteHead Like A Kite's set, was amazing. It had 4x the amount of pedals then your bike would, more buttons then aisle 12 at Jo-Ann's Fabric Store, and enough cords and wires to keep a cat occupied for hours. On top of that their instruments were covered in mannequin heads. A disco ball spun above the drummer adding sparkles to the Caterina's moon and red velvet curtains. Their singer sang into a phone, that was badass. And while this is all going on they have a screen playing homemade Barbie pornography. It was a spectacle. Very visually stimulating, who knew Barbie was so frisky.

One thing about Head Like A Kite, that stood out to me, was how they incorporated real instruments with electronic ones. The drummer played a real symbol, but drummed on an electric drum. I have never seen that before and totally dug it. They had super fun fast music and were a blast to watch. It was like pop electronic fusion with dolls everywhere. Som's kids stole the dance floor and worked it the whole set, they even got a song dedicated to them. I most certainly am going to make it a point to see this band again. They would of tore the Sasquatch Dance Tent apart... next year they have my vote!

thesomshow.comI don't know where to begin with No-Fi Soul Rebellion. I heard that once you go to their shows you will become a frequent attendee. After experiencing what I did last night, I won't ever miss one of their shows when they come through Spokane. They or Mark and Andrea are entertainers without a doubt. Their set is tied with the amount of fun I had at Dan Deacon. It was such a dance explosion that was in your face, literally. Mark's forehead would touch yours, his saliva would sprinkle your cheeks and his body rubbed yours. He was an electronic tornado of dance, clapping, and yelling. It was SO much fun.

I love how they play in the crowd, walking up to almost every single person and touch them or play next to them; even throw a bell-shaker tambourine around your head. It was in your face and it was uncomfortable and awkward but this amazing experience.

Whenever he came around you were like oh man what’s he going to do, but once it was over you realize that was the most fun you have had all week. At one point Mark came up behind me and put a guitar around his neck and mine while he was playing. Then proceeded to leave it around my neck and pull me around as he rod the neck of the guitar, pretty sure it was a hoot. I can say I have never done that before. Does that make me a musician, I pretended to play it while he did?  Mark sang and played the electric guitar and bell tambourine while Andrea sang and rocked a guitar that had no strings and an iPod built in. Very cool concept.

No Fi Soul RebellionTheir set was a chance to put down your wall and let loose and have fun. Which is what every show should be about. Mark and Andrea will be celebrating 6 years of marriage in about a week and we wish them they best. Together they are more fun then Toys R' Us. After their last song which is a new one "Brother Lupine," everyone sat on their floor - their set is physically exhausting.

We said our good-byes and now I am only counting down the days until I get to see them again. It is fantastic live and one of the coolest shows I have been too all year. Musically insane and spontaneous, their set was magic. Thank you Patrick for making it happen!
