Daaaaaaaaaa.....mmnn
"You could have been anywhere tonight but you're here with us," says the singer of Mury. That is a great way to open the night out, it is cool for them to say Thank You before they even started to play. The Caterina was full of boys and girls sitting in their chairs all excited for a Saturday night filled with great live music.
The Salt Lake City guys known as Mury were a super start for the night. Their pop rock sounds made it hard not to move my head around like a bobble-head on your car's dashboard. You could tell that the four boys had a bound like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, they were full of laughter and smiles in between songs making their set seem really personable.
Their drum set was one of funkiest drum sets I have ever seen, it was like the White Stripes but not red and white... sparkly green and white! But my favorite part about the drum set was the eency-wency drum symbol... it was like the size of a 45! I don't know if I have ever noticed those before but it was so damn cute!
Probably the coolest part about this show was the friendship between all of the bands. This was Mury's 4th time on tour with Paper Mache. For one song they even grabbed their singer and guitar player and had them play a song with them. Brian from Paper Mache also joined in on a song.
I listened to Mury on their myspace and I must say they sounded just as good live as they do recorded, to me that proves that they are truly talented musicians. During their last song most of the kids in the crowd sang along and the boys put on a fun set. If you like them as they said, "Help finance our musical revelation!" Check out their CD and catch a show if you can!
With his eyes on the microphone Matthew Winters stood in front of the crowd, sporting a Team Growl T-Shirt that was DIY reading "Daaaaaaaaaa.....mmnn." I so want one, 30 pack of beer and a white tee... I am there. Matthew Winters sounded edgy and honest like he always does.
Like I mentioned above, the best part about the show was the friendship between the bands. Matthew has toured with Paper Mache before and it was cool to see the excitement of them getting to play again on everyone’s faces. Matthew played a song that he hasn't played in a long time titled "The Acrobat," it may just be my third favorite song by him. I will say that "Good Boy," is my second favorite - the lyrics just eat me up like pacman.
It was pretty funny there was a younger girl in the audience (it was her birthday) and before the part where he talks about guns and knifes he tells the kids in the audience to cover their ears. I am like 95% sure (no one is ever 100% sure, even if they say so) that almost the whole crowd quietly sang along to "Dandelion." Matthew encouraged everyone to sing along if you knew the words, and to sing along even if you didn't know them. He is very witty and funny when he talks in between his songs. For the third time I became engulfed in the words and notes of Matthew Winters. Don't forget he has a new album he is working on, keep an eye out for new songs and TEAM GROWL... Dammmmnnnnn.
Paper Mache, let me be honest here. I didn't know about them until Matthew Winters said hey you should check out the Paper Mache show I am playing at. I just knew of the name. I had no idea how big Paper Mache was in Spokane. I kind of even thought they were from out of town.
By this point the Caterina was packed. They even found a way to finagle the audience to get off their booty's and stand up and stack all the chairs. The Caterina had been remodeled and is more open, complete with outdoor seating (you can bring your drinks outside too), and this fabulous red velvet curtain. During Paper Mache I really noticed the shadows on the curtain and it added another cool effect to the winery stage. Looks good Patrick!
Some of the Mury boys joined Paper Mache on stage for a song singing their hearts out having a blast. Even Matthew Winters did an acoustic song with just the singer Chelsea Seth Woodward from Paper Mache, the two complemented each other extremely well. They must of "known each other since they were knee high to a duck," like Chelsea Seth Woodward said. Since they couldn't eat dinner with their friend Steve-o they made it up to him by writing a super short song that was hilarious, loved it! Most peeps were singing along during the whole Paper Mache set, and it made me realize that they guys are total Spokane rockstars. I wish I would have known about them earlier I had a good time watching them play.
Now I need to get to know their songs so I can sing along with everyone else the next time they play in town. Make sure you check out every single one of these bands because they all have something to offer and they are all talented. The whole night was relaxed and full of old friends and new friends; it was a wonderful night other then Patrick running out of Sangria?! But then if he didn't I wouldn't of tried the yummy lemonade beer, so in the end everything worked out... like it always does.
