RAWK Final Four | 3.13.10

When you paid to get in each person received a ballot with all five bands listed! Here is the cool part; each vote was $2 to the band you voted for! So it was very important to vote! Plus the winner received $500 and got to play the last final RAWK Show; in case you hadn’t heard ( I didn’t know this until Saturday) RAWK will be taking a break so the last touring show will be Ted Leo & the Pharmacists on Thursday, March 18th at the BLVD. Then the final show will be put on by the RAWK winners! (read more)

corn mash

Corn Mash | 3.6.10

Nothing like a Johnny Cash song to get the crowd going at the Junction, man people were hollering and I think even at one point there were some ladies out dancing on the floor. They were singing a song about beer and dogs and how you shouldn’t give beer to your dog when a lady yells “I Do” as she is leaving the bar. Priceless. (read more)

the metal shakespeare company

Metal Shakespeare | 3.5.10

he Metal Shakespeare Company set up! This Portland metal band is talented, can harmonize, and have fun all in one set. They came out dressed in Shakespeare clothing including the drummer dressed as Satyr! The singer had better legs then most women in the Junction sporting leopard tights and a green velvet mini. It was beautiful. (read more)

mt. st. helens vietnam band

MT. ST. Helens | 3.5.10

It was like Christmas early tonight because we got to hear new songs that had never been played live before! They did have a few mellower tracks to mix it up but I still tapped my feet. I like how the lovely badass blonde in the band said that sitting is not a good idea – since most peeps sit at the new Empyrean. (read more)

stave azar

Steve Azar | 3.3.10

Steve Azar and Jason Young are great songwriters, performers and overall fun on stage. The multi talented Jason Young help out with backup vocals, told jokes, played percussion and the harmonica. Steve rocked hits including – “I Don’t Have To Be Me (Til’ Monday) and “Sunshine”. (read more)

the sommy's

The Sommy's | 2.27.10

A big thanks to Som Jordan of the Som Show for putting together this local music event! It is something fun and a little different for the kids in the scene to get their hair did and dress up! It was wonderful to see that more then 750 peeps voted. Just a reminder it was open to anyone to vote, and to vote once. The winners were decided by you. I want to start off by saying who won (read more)

sarah darling

Sarah Darling | 2.26.10

The final show of 7 I went to in 4 days in Nashville was Sarah Darling at the CRS Stage. She is a great up and coming performer with an energetic full band of 7 fantastic musicians.  She really isn’t so much up and coming when I talked to her I found out that she has been working on her craft in Nashville for 7 years now. (read more)

Jamey Johnson

Jamey Johnson | 2.25.10

Everything about him is cool after each song he would give the pick to someone in the front row. He has some of the best lyrics around including “you can take my word but you can’t cash my checks” and “rich man don’t know a damn thing when a poor man gets the blues” his songs are just brilliant. He’s the most honest songwriter in Nashville. A few songs into his set he blew me away with an amazing cover of “Crazy”. (read more)

General Jackson | 2.25.10

I had the extreme pleasure of getting to go the Sony, BNA, Arista and Columbia Records showcase that was limited to only 700 people on the General Jackson. It featured Brad Paisley, Kelli Pickler, Josh Thompson, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn and Special Guest Bryan Adams. (read more)

Jerrod Niemann | 2.25.10

He killed it for being someone that was playing for about 40 people in a hotel suite with just his guitar on voice not even a P.A. With songs “Another Drinking Song” and “Lover Lover” it was a great way to start off my day in Nashville. Man again this city is full of so many talented people. (read more)

cave singers

The Cave Singers | 2.25.10

The last time they were in town at the old Empyrean and I feel in love with this band. They move my soul with their rich earthy indie folk tunes. My feet are never still as I try to keep up with this Seattle three-piece. Before they took the stage, people were sitting on the dance floor and really anywhere they could find a seat. The second Pete graced his mouth to the microphone he said lets stand up and try out some new dance moves. (read more)

Lady Antebellumm

Lady Antebellum | 2.24.10

Oh, and their live show is one of the most fun, energetic and exciting shows in county music. It’s amazing to see them in a club that only fits about 300 people because you know that they will be playing arenas from now on. After the thunderbolt that was the first few songs of the set Lady Antebellum brought Luke Bryan on stage to sing on one of their songs he wrote that became Luke’s first #1 hit. (read more)

MCA Showcase

MCA Showcase | 2.24.10

MCA Nashville and Mercury Records put on one of the most brilliant and amazing showcases I have ever seen in my life with one very simple concept take all the talent on our label (excluding George Strait and Shania Twain) and let them play one song. It seems simple right but when you have the talent that this record label does on its roster it becomes brilliant. (read more)

rick huckaby

Rick Huckaby | 2.23.10

My friend and Nashville recording artist, songwriter and former KIX 96 DJ from Spokane Jeremy McComb picked me up to see true local Nashville talent. We went to the Hollywood Disco to see his friend and song writing buddy Rick Huckaby. When we showed up Rick was performing a few acoustic songs including the fantastic “In My Room” and the Trace Adkins hit written by Rick “Muddy Waters”. (read more)

magnetic fields

Magnetic Fields | 2.21.10

Opening with “Kiss Me Like You Mean It,” then going into “You Must Be Out of Your Mind,” then “Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side,” to “Were having a Hootenanny,” to “You’re my Only Home”, to “Shipwrecked,” to the iTunes only Bonus song off their new album and I had to stop taking notes, “You You You You You.” The night had songs from various albums of theirs which was perfect. You had a taste of 69 Love Songs, Realism, The Charm of the Highway Strip, Holiday and more! I couldn’t have asked for a better set list. (read more)

Theory of a Deadman

Theory of a Deadman| 2.20.10

When Theory of a Deadman came out everyone in the house screamed. It was so full we were jammed in their like sardines and just every person (no matter the sex or age) around me was beside themselves. Theory of a Deadman are Spokane Virgins, I think they will be back too after the show tonight. They were a tight live three piece. Their set had a lot of speaker stacks and then way up high was their drummer. It looked badass. (read more)

Everclear

Everclear | 2.19.10

We were behind a kid and it was his first concert; his dad took them and they bought matching Everclear shirts (pretty awesome). It was a good crowd to no jerks or anything like that. "Heroin Girl" was the third song played and as soon as Art said we are going to play a song off Sparkle and Fade the crowd went nuts. He was like wait wait I didn't even tell you the song - guess it didn't matter. (read more)

jason castro

Jason Castro | 2.12.10

2008 American Idol contestant Jason Castro brought his talent and dreadlocks to the KCDA stage for a special acoustic show for about 50 people. He performed songs off his new EP “The Love Uncompromised EP” and a cover of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen in the style of Jeff Buckley. (read more)

Matthew Sonntag

Finn Riggins | 2.4.10

Finn Riggins as usual were a treat to see. They are a perfect live band! All three of them sing, play, and dance; you can tell they are having just as much fun as the crowd is. That may also be while they are always on the road, they are starting another tour! Hopefully they can come back this summer! I also noticed that Cameron added big fuzzy balls to the Polka dot drum set and the steel drums still sounded sweet! (read more)

Matthew Sonntag

Silver Treason | 1.29.10

Silver Treason is full of all sorts of cats that have been playing in the Spokane scene for a while so it’s cool that they are rocking it today in a band together. Do you remember the old silver Christmas tree’s that had the colored light wheel that would spin in circles? The drummer had one of those that hit the drum set which had a sparkly “ST” logo on it for Silver Treason. I thought that was so crafty! (read more)

Matthew Sonntag

White Buffalo | 1.29.10

I decided that during some of his songs he would kind of get louder and progress deeper, I felt like a Buffalo was charging my ear buds but without a riot more gracefully. That is my take on his name I am sure it is off but I would like to think that is why he is know as White Buffalo. He made us laugh with a song about falling in love with a hooker and he did tell the kids in the front row that he tried to keep the show clean. (read more)

Matthew Sonntag

A.A Bondy | 1.25.10

Not every note of the music was as mellow as I make it out to be, there was definitely aggressive build up with a breaking point. They rocked too. A.A. Bondy played solo and with his band, regardless it was intelligent. A.A. Bondy even made the harmonica sound debonair. The crowd was respectfully mellow and took in every note of the music. (read more)

Matthew Sonntag

Matthew Sonntag | 1.23.10

What strikes me about Matthew Sonntag is his sound; it is off the beaten path in the forest and you are not going to find that “path” anywhere else. It’s a fresh breath of originality. As Matt said “it’s rough like sandpaper.” Throughout his set we got to hear him play with his band and without his band. His dad “Screaming Steve” even joined in. How cool is it to have your dad play with your band? (read more)

AFI

AFI | 1.21.10

I don’t know tons about AFI, I know the hits and what I heard I liked; I think I will be adding some more of their music into my collection after the show. I felt like the odd one out on the floor though because every person around me knew every word; that is such an electric feeling. There are a lot of “Whoas” and “Ohs” I could sing along on those parts. (read more)

Ingrid Michaelson

Ingrid Michaelson| 1.17.10

She was actually shockingly funny. After opening up with “Be Ok” she went to say how it has always been a dream of hers to perform next to a giant ceramic cement horse. Then went on to say how it did not have a penis. Yep she used the word penis. (read more)

empyrean

Empyrean Returns | 1.13.10

Goodbye Madison; HELLO Washington. I was extremely surprised when I walked into the new Empyrean! A) It looks nothing like the Big Dipper and B) The Empyrean presence still lives on inside the new building. A lot of changes this year with Spokane’s lovely scene and I think this is going to be a positive one. (read more)

reel big fish

Reel Big Fish | 1.7.10

I have never seen Reel Big Fish but knew the name and saw it everywhere. I didn't know what I was missing out on - shame on me for not seeing these guys before! They were a blast; every band on the Warped Tour should be like these guys! It is sassy, fast, and has the instant satisfaction of a digital download. They put me in such a great mood! empyrean farewell

Empyrean Finale | 12.23.09

I think I asked Michelle and Chrisy all summer what was going to happen about the Sprinkler Issue. I knew that it had to be done for safety and I can’t get angry at the fire department because well, my uncle is the Battalion Chief of the Valley. However this new law has resulted in the closing of a second home for CIOM and that breaks our hearts. (read more)

singing nuns

Singing Nuns | 12.10.09

If I counted correctly, there were 19 Nuns on stage all dressed perfectly in their wrinkle free royal blue habits. They were graciously welcoming and warmed our hearts with their music at the Bing. They opened the evening with Hodie Christus Natus Est singing as they walked down the isles with candles in their hands. The first song they sang on stage was Joy to the World and it just lit up the room with the Christmas spirit! (read more)

dweezil zappa

Dweezil Zappa | 11.29.09

Dweezil, the son of the late Frank Zappa has seemingly inherited his fathers immense musical talent or could quite possibly be channeling ol Frank himself. Surrounded by top flight musicians, Zappa worked his way through such gems as "Yellow Snow" "Catholic Girls" "Peaches En Regalia" and of course "Willie The Pimp". (read more)

gwar

GWAR | 11.28.09

At least when you see GWAR you can understand the lyrics and the singing is not bad. As well, you get to see things like MJ rape a space baby with Oderus Urungus (singer). Then GWAR defaced MJ and let his blood cover the crowd. GWAR also defeated a twenty-foot tall robot. Besides, even though President Obama gave them award from being badass rockers, they still beheaded him. It is not a show for the easily offended. (read more)

built to spill

Built To Spill | 11.21.09

Built to Spill. Everyone is going to hate me for saying this but… IT WAS BORING. And I am a Built to Spill fan; I get who they are and what they do! I know it’s not upbeat music, but I saw them at Sasquatch and the set was great it was quick and rocking, because they had a time limit. For some reason tonight every song was dragged out into a jam-ish kind of feel. It was tedious. Maybe I had to be stoned to get it (read more)

agent ribbons

Agent Ribbons | 11.18.09

Agent Ribbons, they left it all to hit the road and this is their shot to show the states what they’ve got. In case you haven’t figured it out, they have got a lot. Watching them on stage they are expressive, theatrical, and spunky. They have fun, and in return by the last song everyone else was dancing and having a good time. It’s hard not to smile and enjoy their set, even tap your feet and waltz across the floor. (read more)

the pharmacy

The Pharmacy | 11.16.09

Everyone crowded around their instruments and microphones as soon as the Pharmacy began to play, and well after Scott asked us to move in. There was a great turnout which was awesome to see a big group of kids out on a Monday night. A, B, and C, also known as a) Stefan Rubicz, b) Scott Yoder, and c) Brendhan Bowers made our Monday night one of the cooler Monday’s in a long time. (read more)

ian anderson

Ian Anderson | 11.15.09

Ian Anderson’s stage presence was like Classical Musician Conductor meets Gogol Bordello where he did not stop moving. He was all over the stage with his strange but entertaining movements while he played the flute. He made the flute cool. There had to be kids at that show that are begging to be in band this week to play the flute just like Ian. (read more)

listener

Listener | 11.15.09

I respect his words and take on expressing himself. I will always make a point to see him. He even continued tonight with a sore throat – not fun especially because he uses a lot of vocals! Listener travels with a computer, a few horns, oh and a washing machine which he uses like an instrument, which Chris from Fienix plays. (read more)

tyrone wells

Tyrone Wells | 11.13.09

Tyrone played what a few crowd favorites like “All Broken Hearts” which was featured on One Tree Hill. The night was complete with enjoyable music, a positive crowd, and a lot of goofing around; even a ho-down with Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers. It’s cool to see a Spokane kid make it to this point and we wish him the best. (read more)

karli fairbanks

Karli Fairbanks | 11.12.09

Karli Fairbanks mentioned how she was glad to play with Broken Blossoms because her grandparents like that type of music. Karli looked darling in a new dark hair style and a great dress! It was extremely kind of her to do something good with her EP “Followed”, and a great way to get the word out! The EP came about because there were 4 songs that just didn’t fit on her latest album. Therefore she added one more and ta da! (read more)

dropkick murphy's

Dropkick Murphy's | 11.10.09

I have NEVER EVER seen the Knitting Factory so full in my life, there must have been at least 1700 people there. Before The Flatliners took the stage, I had an entire array of cocktails on my skirt. When you stood in the bar it was a constant shuffle, yell to talk, shuffle, yell to talk, bumped, shuffle, drink, shuffle. It was a new kind of moshpit. (read more)

Queensryche | 11.5.09

Queensryche has very devoted fans. The Knitting Factory was full of guys, gals, and their kids who were decked out in classic rock gear including tight leather pants, studs, and lots of hair products. Steve Martin

Steve Martin | 11.2.09

I must say what I saw was Steve Martin doing what he does best: EVERYTHING. He was funny and conversational between songs. The music was fantastic with some of the most entertaining bluegrass songs I’ve heard in my life. Rrom his new album The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo. The Steep Canyon Rangers were five of the most talented musicians to take the stage at The Fox. (read more)

Joshua Radin

Joshua Radin | 11.2.09

His stories included one about how one day on tour (11 months after he broke up with his girlfriend – so he wasn’t quite over her) it was so cold outside, his bus froze over. When he walked out of it a young fan was standing outside with a picture of him and his ex and she asked him to sign it. That was enough to make him upset so he wrote a song about it. I guess it takes 12 months to get over a girl. (read more)

Hockey

Hockey | 10.31.09

This was my first time seeing Hockey in town, I know right. I wasn’t downtown going to shows when they were in Spokane. I caught them at Sasquatch this year though and that was what hooked me in on their tunes. Perfect party or feel good music that instantly gets you going. I look forward to the next time I will get to see them until then back to Mind Chaos on repeat. (read more)

Mat Kearney

Mat Kearney | 10.30.09

Mat has catchy songs that people can relate too and are easy to listen too. I want to classify him as rock because when you see him with a live band that is what it feels like. Though if I catch myself singing along to “Close to Love” in the car I would say it is somewhat pop music. Either way, he has clear vocals and makes music that is appropriate for a lot of people. It makes sense that the Knitt was full, he put on a good set and I am sure he made a few girls night. (read more)

The Pack A.D.

The Pack A.D. | 10.30.09

Birds & Batteries | 10.28.09

Birds & Batteries went straight into The Villain, then Out in the Woods, and Lightning UTNG Version which are all off their new EP that JUST came out titled “Up to No Good.” Personally Lightning UTNG Version is my favorite song so I was sooo excited to hear it live. They sounded splendid. The vocals were perfect just like they came off the record that was playing at home. (read more)

thao and the get down stay down

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down | 10.24.09

It stayed full throughout the night and people were ready to dance with Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. I was surprised that the age difference in the group stayed and people were curious as to what was going to happen after the PCP. Thao reminded me a lot of an indie Karen-O. She had a great attitude, let loose, rocked out, and had a super cute outfit and cowboy boots on. (read more)

the hold steady

The Hold Steady | 10.21.09

The five New Yorkers tore the Big Dipper to shreds with their fun, high energy music. The Hold Steady show had everything, a crazy person that jumped on the stage and mumbled words before the guitar tech pushed him back into the audience, a fan that was accidentally hit in the head with a microphone by Craig Finn, fast Hold Steady classics, few slower songs and great stories in between. wooden birds

Slipknot & Deftones | 10.21.09

Their masks have changed a lot of the years and have gotten creepy as hell. At one point the clown and the guy with the long nose went up into the audience, fucked with the sound guy, knocked down metal barriers, and yelled and possible try to throw a hit at some fans. From that point on any time they left the stage or the lights went down I got nervous. (read more)

wooden birds

The Wooden Birds | 10.18.09

The Wooden Birds were the best sounding band to play the Empyrean in a long time. They knew how to work the small room. The volume was perfect. You could hear every instrument and the drummer was playing with brushes and it sounded like you were setting right next to the kit.I’ve been noticing a lot more drummers putting tambourines on their high hat. I think it’s a cool effect and when done properly. (read more)

Ben Folds with the Spokane Symphony | 10.18.09

Ben Folds walked out on stage with his striped polo and jeans as the symphony was playing his song and he went straight into a night of music. Small Town Nation | 10.17.09

So much energy that the crowd was just loving it and letting loose. These kids know how to entertain the crowd and play good music, normally it is one or the other. Apostle of Hustle & Gogol Bordello | 10.11.09

Gogol Bordello is fast and fun punk rock to a tee. The show never stopped until the encore. It went from song to song and the next thing you know you were dripping in sweat and the show was over. It is very eclectic and you instantly clap and kick your feet. I danced all over the place, even by myself. They have strong lyrics and a great attitude that makes everyone have a good time. The Dead Trees | 10.4.09

Tonight was the second time the Dead Trees had been in town. With double guitars, 1 bass guitar, and a multi-colored sparkly drum set that read oops it was a kick! The silky vocals and casual stage presence wrapped my mind up in their music like a string around a yo-yo. The band moved around on stage a lot and the bass player even shook a maraca in one hand and played a cowbell on the drum set with the other. (read more)

Terrain | 10.2.09

The whole layout and thoughts behind Terrain is very hip and clean. The crowd’s age seemed to vary from 18 to 60. It was nice that you could come and go throughout the night too. Plus with there being no cover we could buy more drinks, cheers! (read more)

Finn Riggins, Church Mouse & Sera Cahoone | 10.1.2009

There was a guitar, three keyboards, microphones, and a black and white polka-dotted drum kit. Oh and a steel drum! He was all wrists and had a suitcase full of drumsticks. (read more)

Bryan Adams | 9.29.2009

The four girls to the left of me knew every word to every song. Bryan even noted after the first time that a girl yelled I Love You, that those yells were the Spokane mating call. Grand Archives and The Most Serene Republic | 9.28.2009

The Most Serene Republic lost their gear in Canada last night. They are from Canada. THAT SUCKS! The positive cool side to that, they killed it with big smiles on their faces less then 24 hours later in Spokane. Thanks to Dale and Hoffman's music for getting a trombone to complete their set. TMSR managed to cram seven people and their gear on stage at the Empyrean and play without giving anyone a bloody nose. (read more)

Jason Mraz | 9.25.2009

Jason Mraz sounded just like he does on any album as he was standing barefoot on stage along the river. He was dancing and had a lot of energy and was excited to be playing back in Spokane. Riverside Breakdown and The Blakes | 9.25.2009

The Blakes oh me oh my. I shake shake shake shake shaked my ass to their set. I also sang along with the other kids on the floor. At first I sat in the back and finished my beer watching the crowd. insane clown posse

Hed P.E. & Insane Clown Posse | 9.20.2009

or being a band since the 80’s it is bad ass that they have a following like they do. A dedicated group of fans that call themselves “family.” I don’t know if I am a die hard ICP fan but what we saw was a show in itself, a spectacle that reminded me of GWAR. If they came back to town I would probably go again just to see what crazy stuff they would do next. Not to mention I didn’t get to paint my face this time. (read more)

Olaf Olaf Olaf & Yourself and the Air | 9.19.2009

Tonight I was a little under the weather so unfortunately when Yourself and the Air took the stage I had to sit down in the back. But here is what I will tell you from sitting in the back on a bench. Every kid got up off their feet and stood on chairs to see this Chicago band play. They were even shaking what there mamas gave them on top of chairs; made me a little nervous but it worked. He has aged with charm and wisdom while still playing the piano with perfect timing and graceful movements. The moment he took the stage he was applauded and received a standing ovation before they even started to play. (read more)

Keith Urban | 9.14.09

Keith Urban managed to acknowledge every section and put on an entertaining laid back concert. The crowd was jacked to be there and that energy was spread through out the night. Not only is Keith Urban good looking but has smooth country vocals and can play the guitar. One of the better country shows I have been too all year. (read more)

finding fiction

Finding Fiction | 9.11.09

The moment they played I felt like I could close my eyes and it seemed like we were back at Matt's listening to the album. They sounded flawless. I looked back at my notes and I wrote that "they are smooth and polished like my nana's silver." For being a band for a little over a year they already have an E.P. and a full album plus we got to hear a few news songs that haven't been recorded. They have their ducks in a row and can hammer out big city indie tunes like an architect. (read more)

michael franti

Michael Franti | 9.9.09

I loved the positive energy that came from the crowd and from the stage. We have been to 127 shows this year (so far) and I have never seen a crowd that danced, clapped, and sang along from the front row to the back of the bar for the entire night. Franti & Spearhead have some of the most dedicated fans I have ever seen and the fun-ness that came off of them sucks you in and no matter who you are you had a great time. I even got out on the floor and danced around for a song or two. (read more)

Black Eyed Peas

Bumbershoot 2009 | 9.5-6-7.2009

I had reconvened with my group in the beer garden, this is when DC got us hip to the new Seattle craze created by the madman himself: The Chardonnay Bomb. Yes it’s exactly that. Wine and Rockstar. I was like “you’re fucking retarded DC” and he’s all “No. You’re retarded. Cause this shit’s awesome” And like that, I was pouring two glasses of 4 dollar wine into a giant glass of Rockstar. (read more)

the tubes

The Tubes | 9.6.2009

Fee waybill is almost 60. The Tubes were in thier heyday in the 80's with such hits as "She’s A Beauty" "Talk To Ya Later" and "I Dont Want to Wait Anymore". There couldnt have been a band more suited for the MTV generation. I was thrilled to hear these gems live again. (read more)

modest mouse

Modest Mouse | 9.5.2009

I will be the first to admit that I am not patient when it comes to waiting for the show to start but after we got on the floor I knew we were stuck for a while. We enjoyed chatting with the kids behind us who met at the Modest Mouse show on Halloween in 07' and are now fans of the band and each other. That 2007 Halloween show was a blast and also SOLD OUT. The people at the show were respectful and not pushy which helps make any experience better. (read more)

Oil of Angels | 9.5.2009

Oil of Angels was probably the coolest band to play Pig Out, it was rockin, dark, and a little bit mystical. I didn't know Henry and Vaughn were in another band, mixing it up. It was cool to see a third side of them as musicians... in a full band verses singer songwriter without the scary but lovely Theremin. (read more)

dave matthews band

Dave Matthews Band | 9.4.2009

One of my favorite things about seeing Dave Matthews at the Gorge is the age groups he appeals too; from newborns to grandparents even entire families. You don't normally see that at the Gorge. And speaking about the crowd, the crowd at a Dave show is full of nice people all there to have a good time (at least from my experience) through I did see a few drunk girls fall. Yeah it was a bit funny. (read more)

band of horses

Band of Horses | 9.2.2009

The house appeared almost sold out tonight, which is cool for an indie band at the Knitting Factory. You don’t always see that. Speaking of the crowd Ben also mentioned that we were a “rowdy crowd.” Rowdy because we were excited to see you live! He meant it in a good way, for he had the biggest smile on his face when he said it. (read more)

marilyn manson

Marilyn Manson | 8.31.2009

Opening with "We're From America" and closing with "Beautiful People" it was everything I wanted. There were hits, songs from today and yesterday. Burning a Bible, humping his microphone, sparkly confetti, paper confetti, and moving across the stage like a jack hammer. It was sexy, loud, and as Matt would say "fun as shit." I respect the fact that he said thank you over and over for us showing up, for supporting him. (read more)

nickelback

Nickelback, Hinder & Papa Roach | 8.29.2009

Let's be honest hear we are not the biggest Nickelback fans but we were so curious as to why 20,000 people are. To sell out the Gorge is a big deal, there has to be a reason why they sold it out. Matty and I hopped in the VW and headed off to Geroge, WA. To shuffle 20,000 people into the Gorge takes some time. We got off the exit at 5:20pm and didn't get parked in the venue until 6:40pm. I have never waited so long to get in. (read more)

india.arie

India.Arie | 8.27.2009

India walked on stage after her band and she looked gorgeous in a bright dress. She instantly said thank you and then asked to see the theater and the audience. As the house lights came on she waved hello to us. From there on out she was the most down to earth, kind, loving, musician I have seen live. As she said if you didn't know her, you will by the end of the night. (read more)

bob weir

Bob Weir and Ratdog | 8.25.2009

We got to hear Grateful Dead tunes, Bob Weir & Ratdog tunes, and I think we even heard a Dylan cover. I do not know all about the Grateful Dead but obviously they were a big deal because the crowd was hopped up on the Q to sing along and yell out things like "I LOVE YOU BOBBY WEIR!" It kind of felt like a blast from the past there with the crowd dressed in late 60's early 70's attire in a restored vintage theater. It was cool. (read more)

throw me the statue

Throw Me The Statue | 8.23.2009

There was a lot of gear on stage, a lot. Two of the guys each had two keyboards and then a guitar or a glockenspiel. Each of the three kids up front also had their own pedal boards with a minimum of four pedals. Their drummer had a blue and clear drum set that made me want to go swimming, it looked super cool. Not to mention their singer also played bass and guitar. All of this, you would think it would be a little bit of a cluster but it was the sweetest sugar coated indie pop band that was polished. (read more)

john tesh

John Tesh | 8.22.2009

In between the songs he told a few stories about music, his radio show and his kids. When he got to the story about his daughter hip hop dancing I would have never thought I would see a Hip Hop dancer at a John Tesh show let along Tesh beat boxing while he was dancing. Up on the big screen behind the band jokes would fly as John Tesh would tell stories, and just talk to the audience. He would be talking about the structure of a song he wrote and the screen behind him would say, “John is a big music nerd”. (read more)

japanther

Japanther | 8.21.2009

Japanther came hauling into the parking lot and jumped out of the car from Seattle to put their gear on stage. After setting up graffiti covered speaker stacks with a Japanther flag strung in between them kids were quick to huddle up around them on the stage. They told us "we are not your parents do what you want!" And the crowd did it was a mosh pit at times and a dance party at others. It was fun, they were fun. (read more)

Matt Coleman w/ Allison Sattinger | 8.20.2009

Matt Coleman sat on stage with his guitar in his hand and opened up his set by playing a few songs on his own, Allison joined him soon after. I liked how he added a hint of percussion into the songs by tapping his guitar. His fingers were very fast on the strings and then he could make these little bebops with his voice, it was really cool. I am glad his friends requested “Bird on my Shoulder,” because I ended up really enjoying it. (read more)

Rocky Votolato | 8.18.09

I had a huge grin on my face for tonight was the fullest I have seen any local venue in a while. The Empyrean was packed full of bodies all to see The Toy Garden, Paper Mache, and Rocky Votolato. The Toy Garden opened the show up as a three piece with no bass player. It was a good twist, it didn't sound bad at all. It was cool to see Will play a show since we always see him running sound. Vans Warped Tour | 8.15.2009

What has seven stages with over seventy bands from noon till ten? The 15th Anniversary of the Vans Warped Tour at the Gorge Amphitheater.  At Warped you walk in to a huge blow up that reads what time the bands will be playing and at what stage. It's the a la cart take on seeing a punk rock show. Outside of the bands the Warped Tour is a huge Punk Rock Flea Market, where "tips are sexy!" (read more)

School of Rock | 8.13.2009

I am the biggest jerk in the world. When Matty and I were walking over (keep in your mind that I have never heard of the School of Rock before) I asked Matt “… if they suck can we leave early.” I had NO IDEA that these kids are pretty much 100% better then half the bands we see. I just wanted to slap myself after I saw them play. These kids are going to be on the cover of Rolling Stone someday. (read more)

new faces

The Racquet, Girlfriends, and New Faces | 8.12.2009

New Faces made Matt want to move to Seattle because we don’t get that type of music in Spokane. Fun to watch great to dance too. My two favorite songs were “Ides of March” and “Ms Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” I liked how the drummer Conor chimmed in on occasion and that the bass player Kyle takes turns with Nico singing. They seem like close friends, which is pretty nifty. Just don’t sleep with each other’s girlfriends and break up. (read more)

joel smith

Joel Smith CD Release Party | 8.11.2009

Joel's band was called the Slippery Tones for the night because there were so many of his friends playing. More then the Hands of Plenty, and there are plenty of them. Jamie Frost joined in on guitar for a few songs, Jessica Hand sang on two songs, Karli sang on a few songs as well, Mark Ward (who is also in the Hands of Plenty) played the guitar and a cool key flute instrument, Carmen played the saxophone, and Kim Wescott played her violin for a song. There was a ton of kids on stage and it sounded perfect. (read more)

Acoustic Explosion Day 2 | 8.9.2009

After night one we were ready to take on night two of the Acoustic Explosion. Within the first five minutes of being at the Empyrean both Matt and I were blown away by Maxwell Hughes. Holy cow. Maxwell doesn't need lyrics to sing, his fast guitar notes create a music that speaks a story of it's own. He just flew through the strings on his blue green acoustic guitar even with an extra pick on his thumb. (read more)

Acoustic Explosion Day 1 | 8.8.2009

After working all day at Riverfront Park for Kid's Day Matt and I slowly made our way down to the Empyrean Coffee House for the first night of the 4th Annual Acoustic Explosion. I will admit this is my first time at the Acoustic Explosion and I will also admit that I will be back next year. Kelly from ERC Booking did a fantastic job. (read more)

boz scaggs

Boz Scaggs | 8.8.2009

First off, the first concert that I ever saw was Boz Scaggs in the Spokane Coliseum, June '77. It was my 14th birthday, it was awesome. Now here we are, some 32 years later and Boz sounds just as great as he did back then. The surroundings could not have been more spectacular. (read more)

the fray

The Fray | 8.7.2009

The Fray covered every song I wanted to hear from Over My Head (Cable Car) to You Found Me. Even while playing the more mellow piano songs Isaac Slade managed to rock it out and have fun. During “She Is” the crowd got to have some fun, when prompted from the screen we would clap once, dance wild, be still, turn around, and yell loud. Everyone did it and it looked really cool. It threw off the band so much Isaac was laughing and almost couldn’t make it through the song. (read more)

mon cheri

Mon Cheri | 8.6.2009

The new songs are great, the showmanship is better and the crowd participation is more involved, they even added a keyboard player for tonight’s performance. At the beginning of the set they dedicated a song to a couple in the audience and they got up and slow danced in front of the stage. Mon Cheri is a fantastic band, one of Spokane’s best and their music just brings back some great memories of 60’s pop songs and new memories of great summer days in Spokane. (read more)

See Me River | 8.6.2009

I was excited to see See Me River, ha I said see twice. I didn’t know this going into the show but, we were in for a treat that night. I say we as in the intimate audience that watched them. For starters See Me River was a four piece for the evening, it wounded great. Kerry said normally we would have someone who tells jokes in between. (read more)

rock league

Rock League Jam Session | 8.4.2009

I must say I was very excited to see the kids perform live after hearing about the camp from the start, seeing the logo, and the cool shirts – I couldn’t wait! When we arrived at Olive It Café, volunteers and camp leaders were outside handing out flyers and cooking up yummy $1 hamburgers and hotdogs.Everyone from the Northeast Youth Center (NEYC) was so kind and just as excited as the audience to see the kids they have been working with for two months play! electric city football camp

Electric City Football Camp | 8.1.2009

It was the debut show for Electric City Football Camp and we were excited. Chris and Shane have been in two fantastical bands before so we knew it was going to be good and a little bit wild. By far this two man band was a blast to see. Like going from Please Draw In Me to Boy Eats Drum Machine, Boy Eats Drum Machine was the perfect way to get the crowd ready for Electric City Football Camp. E.C.F.C. had high energy, tight pants with a lot of booty shakin, and sweet dance moves to go along with their wild music. (read more)

everyday jones

Everyday Jones | 8.1.2009

I liked how positive they were and how much fun they were having together. There attitude carried into the audience. Another interesting aspect to their set was how they would mix cover songs into original songs, very creative. Alissa’s sister was in the crowd and she made a point to let her pick the next song which was between The Police and Pat Benatar, because she never gets to see them play. Her sister picked Benatar and the two covered “Love is a Battlefield,” very nicely. (read more)

lyle lovett

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band | 7.30.2009

The Lyle Lovett show was great. The only complaint I had was that “his people” approved for me to shoot the first 3 songs and Lyle did not even perform in those first 3 songs. So when you look at the photos and wonder why Lyle Lovett is not in them it is because he did not perform in the songs I was aloud to shoot. (read more)

Henry Nordstrom | 7.28.2009

It was a special night for Henry Nordstrom. It was his EP Release show. We have seen Henry a few times now and he is such a down to earth kid who writes these brilliant songs. I haven't gone up to him and talked to him yet like I have with a lot of artists. It's just cool that he scoops ice cream by day and will musically scoop your mind and ears by night. I am not sure what scooping your mind or ears is but it's a good thing. Tonight was the first night we got to hear a slightly more reverbed Henry. (read more)

Ottmar Liebert | 7.27.2009

The only thing I knew about Ottmar Liebert at the start of the year was that he was a guitar player that has come through town a few times before and that there is a autographed guitar of his hanging in the lobby of the radio station I work at. (read more)

Capitol Hill Block Party | 7.25.2009

The Capitol Hill Block Party is quite the event in Seattle. This year was our first year going. I would say overall we had a good time. We arrived at the block party around 4pm after finding the Will Call entrance, finding an ATM, and well grabbing a cold beer. I didn’t know that it was going to be like a little market too. Urban Outfitters had a booth along with other local clothing and vintage stores. (read more)

the cave singers

The Cave Singers | 7.24.2009

The Cave Singers made sure everyone in the Empyrean were stomping their feet during their set. They have this ability musically to make your ears and mind get wrapped up in their music moving your body. Each song had this rich heavy beat that was very addictive. The three boys were very down to earth and friendly and their personalities shined through their music. Their singer was talking about his Irish Car Bomb of a shot of white wine in Guinness beer. He then says "the white wine is speaking to me," as his cheeks were glowing on stage. He was funny. (read more)

sonic youth

Sonic Youth | 7.24.2009

Friday Night the Knitting Factory was full of the people in Spokane that I would sit in a bar with and start talking about music at noon and it would be Midnight before I knew it and we would still be fighting over if “Daydream Nation” or “Goo” was a better Sonic Youth album. To this day I will still say “Daydream Nation”. (read more)

son volt

Cowboy Junkies & Son Volt | 7.23.2009

Son Volt. When they casually walked on stage in their western shirts and went straight into a song it was very powerful and instantly grabbed me in. Just every instrument was on tune and every note sounded right. It’s very cool when you see a band that sounds studio quality live, it doesn’t happen all the time (read more)

mark ward

Mark Ward | 7.21.2009

As Mark Ward said "that was the 1st time a folk show has ever been shut down by the police." Matt and I arrived at the Rocket Market last night a little late and to a packed patio. There wasn't even standing room inside of the drinking area on the patio and there were people sitting across the street. On the bad side when we showed up there was no music. Then moments later we were told the police were called by a grumpy neighbor who made Mark Ward and his band unplug their instruments because they were too loud. (read more)

no doubt

No Doubt, Paramore & The Sounds | 7.19.2009

Never ever did I think I was going to see No Doubt. I thought for sure Gwen was going to go solo be a mom and that was that. I remember listening to Tragic Kingdom on cassette when I was a kid, I was pretty excited to see them and know that they were going to rock No Doubt classics. Opening with Spiderwebs from there on out the night was packed with the hits. Matt saw No Doubt at White River six or so years ago and he said they sound just as good and look the same, which is impressive for not being out on the road in a while. Gwen killed it and looked FANTASTIC (read more)

silver treason

Silver Treason | 7.17.2009

Great show, considering the fact that the four members in S.T ( Keven Cameron, Jamie Frost, Brian Young and Cameron Smith)  collectively have at least 25 years of  providing the Spokane  scene with thier musical services. The amount of years played also shows in the way that these four interact. Silver Treason's show was a country-filled "sinners on Saturday/ Saints on Sunday" twang fest. (read more)

Koreshakti Dance Company | 7.16.2009

My jaw hasn't dropped like it did tonight in a long time. I, probably like most of the audience was blown away by these women. With twenty different dances and over ten different women from ballet to belly dancing, it was full of variety. Watching these ladies move their bodies was mesmerizing. (read more)

Miranda Lambert | 7.15.2009

“Ya’ll ready for some rock n roll tonight?”  Heck yes I was! Most of the country concerts I’ve been to usually play two types of music. Country and Western. Miranda Lambert was definitely the exception to the rule. In fact this Texan only plays by her rules; which in it self...Rules (read more)

revernd horton heat

Reverend Horton Heat | 7.14.2009

The Knitting Factory was full of big hair, cuffed jeans, dresses, and high heels. Rockabilly took over Spokane for the night. The ladies were dolled up and the guys were ready to rock. Nekromantix opened up the night with their Rockabilly/Pyschobilly tunes, with a coffin stand up bass, bats on a white Gibson guitar, and a smokin' hot female drummer I don't think anyone else would of asked for more. coldplay

Coldplay | 7.11.2009

Trying to shuffle 21,000 people into one venue is a little bit tough. Major kudo's to the kids running the parking lot along with sheriffs, granted it still took us 45 minutes to get into the venue. We did miss the first band, but I heard they were folkish and mellow. The Gorge was filled to the top of the hill, left to right, all the way down to the front of the stage. Ages varying from 80-years-old to a newborn and plenty of pregnant women. It was a show no one wanted to miss and perfect for any music lover. (read more)

emerson drive

Emerson Drive | 7.11.2009

Ritzville Blues Festival | 7.11.2009

Downtown Ritzville was blocked off and full of lawn chairs, motorcycles, food vendors, and one big stage in the heart of historic Ritzville. One of the cool aspects of his festival is that you have live music outside on the main stage and then in certain bars in the same area you can catch more bands that play inside as well. I was with my good friend Kirby and unfortunately he is only 20 so we caught three great bands on the main stage. (read more)

Campfire at Caterina #2 | 7.10.2009

The concrete floor was covered in beer bottles, wine glasses, and all of their instruments which included a mandolin, stand up bass, harmonica, glockenspiel, violin, viola, guitars, tambourine, bongo, maracas, and a kid drumming on the floor with drumsticks. All together this plethora of musicians and instruments swept me off my feet with a night full of relaxed fun music. (read more)

Campfire at Caterina #1 | 7.9.2009

Here I am sitting outside around 7:45pm with Matthew Winters, Justin Knittel, a friend of theirs and two other girls ... to get the math straight there was about six of us (not including PK who was inside). The sun was slowly setting and Patrick came out to light the log for the fire. Which by the way is so ironic as for today the Inlander published an article about the new fire code and sprinkler systems in venues around town, but I don't need to go into any more detail. Iji and Watercolor Paintings | 7.8.2009

"...I wrote this song when I was asleep." It was over within thirty seconds and I loved it. It almost teased you with Iji's dinks, chimes, and clinks. Iji... so odd and wonderful at the same time that I want to wrap it andsave it for a sunny day because the world has too many songs for a "rainy day." I loved the keyboard/flute instrument, this was my second time seeing one of them. It is such a peculiar fun instrument that complimented the kids other like flat harp keyboard looking instrument. It was pretty rad. (read more)

robin trower

Robin Trower | 7.1.2009

To my Dad the album Bridge of Sighs was a night time album, and we spent a lot of nights listening to it. So the fact that the shoot was approved was amazing because it sounded great, he has a great band, and it brought back a lot of really fun childhood memories. Bridge of Sighs to me has always been pretty cool, musically it's flawless and it always made me feel cool because I got to listen to it with the grownups. (read more)

The Yardbirds & The Zombies | 6.30.2009

1963 and 1988 (the years we were born respectively) Trucker Dave and I stand together at the Knitting Factory to see two very important bands play... two very important bands known as The Yardbirds and The Zombies. Now to set the premises here I am 21 and Dave is 46, Dave obviously knows more about them then I do.  (read more)

cyrus fell down

Cyrus Fell Down | 6.29.2009

With lollipops & bare feet, highlights & dreadlocks, and friends & family the Empyrean was mixed well with people of all sorts. Everyone rose to their feet and gathered around the stage to watch the truly talented Cyrus Fell Down. With a one of a kind bass player, one shoe'd drummer, and a singer who can show you the amount of muscles you have in your face by singing; their set was fun to see. (read more)

the toy garden

The Toy Garden | 6.27.2009

Saturday night after Hoopfest everyone was a little beat in more ways the one. Pablo Trucker mentioned how their singer played with his "boys" (who were in the back of the Empyrean) known as the Seattle Super Sonics. Things didn't go too well and as he said "there's gotta be a loser”. Tired from playing he still managed to put on a great set with his band. (read more)

the carter twins

The Carter Twins | 6.24.2009

The Carter Twins are just 19, young "pups" as Coyote said and they knew how to put on a show. The entire band bursting with energy and spunk they pranced along the stage clapping and getting the crowd excited. I loved their enthusiasm even when there wasn't a large crowd on the floor. Everyone knows how Taylor Swift sings about how boys can break your heart, well The Carter Twins said wait a minute girls break hearts too - and took that and ran with it. (read more)

slayer

Slayer | 6.22.2009

The Knitting Factory was only a few away from selling out as Slayer took the stage on a Monday night. Matt and I were trying to be hardcore by j-walking to the show. I have never seen so many black t-shirts, tattoos, long hair (on dudes), and piercings at the Knitting Factory, it was kind of cool. I must say Slayer was a total testosterone bro-mance night full of mullets and headbanging. It was a bit hard to not move your head to Slayers music. Is headbanging contagious? (read more)

blind pilot

Toy Garden, Wartime Blues, and Blind Pilot | 6.21.2009

I am glad the Blind Pilot show was moved to the Empyrean Coffee House for two reasons tonight. One because they have delicious hot chocolate and because of the environment in the "brick music cave." With the right band the white Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling create this whimsical feeling that you can only get there. the wallflowers

The Wallflowers | 6.20.2009

Being the son of Bob Dylan explains part of the reason why Jakob is so talented. I am sure he picked up his own quirks but how cool to have such a big musical icon as your father. When The Wallflowers took the stage the audience chattered and clapped with excitement. Jakob with his guitar and his hat, he had this calm sophisticated stance that carried through his music. Not a single note was off, and everyone was on key the set was skillfully played by the whole band. (read more)

the awkward years

The Awkward Years & Love is Chemicals | 6.18.2009

We were treated with the first ever world premiere of Spokane's The Awkward Years along with the super cool kids from San Francisco Love is Chemicals. The music tonight was delightful, the weather was perfect, and the people were fun... I don't think I need much more. I will agree, "There is nothing funny about baby poop," but Congratulations to the singer in The Awkward Years because he just had a baby boy named Jackson about a week ago. Very sweet, that kid is going to have a cool dad. (read more)

loom

Loom | 6.16.2009

Loom are officially Caterina wine-o's, I don't blame them the Imposter white wine is delish. Now, seeing them outside was cool because of the white lights only lighting up the drummer but, the light show from the inside Caterina gig earlier this year was cool also so I am going to have to say that it’s a tie. "Don't buy merch, buy us a beer first." “I will trade beer for a CD” just a few quotes from the end of the bands set.  (read more)

starfucker

Starfucker | 6.14.2009

We did not starfuck Starfucker but man did they f*ck my ear buds up with explosive electronic beats, pops, and noises. They were up on stage killin’ it like U.F.O.’s were going to arrive in 15 to abduct them into Space. It was fast, fun, and made your body shake like a morocco. Biggest dance party I have been to in Spokane, on par with the Caterina No-Fi show. It takes balls to have a name like Starfucker and even bigger kahones to play like they did. (read more)

Henry Nordstrom | 6.12.2009

Henry Nordstrom was a timid man. He danced his way around the microphone and did a wonderful job during his set. His friend Mr. Woods was on the electric guitar adding in this extra sound that fit perfectly with Nordstrom. When he was playing he cut down the re-verb on his vocals majorly, he has a great singing voice. (read more)

shiny toy guns

Shiny Toy Guns | 6.9.2009

Shiny Toy Guns. Wow. I am a little bummed they were a wee late but that is life and they are a touring band. I am really glad that they still made it and decided to play and not cancel that is pretty much awesome! The band loves Spokane, which was their sixth show. From the start with 40 kids at them to now with a couple of hundred. I am intrigued to see where they will go from here, Knitting Factory/Arena? The band defiantly packs the punch of a shiny toy gun. I love their songs "Le Disko," and "Ricochet," I was more then happy to hear both of them! (read more)

mon cheri

Sunday's with Som: Mon Cheri | 6.7.2009

We have seen Mon Cheri a few times and I will say tonight it was a new experience because they played new songs (that aren't even out on their new CD-they are fresh), current songs, and songs going back... circa 2005. It was a new side of Mon Cheri we haven't heard. I like this whole two-three hour set business, you really get to see the band in a new light. They had a great time on stage, laughing, drinking/spilling beers, making jokes, and dancing. Their attitude is quickly passed on to the audience. (read more)

no fi soul rebellion

No-Fi Soul Rebellion | 6.5.2009

Friday June 5th was not only a night full of electronic beats, but it was also First Friday. It’s cool to walk up to the Caterina Winery and see folks of all ages outside sipping wine while local artists Nore and Jason Corocoran were displaying their art, and actually painting inside. Their colorful works decorated the Caterina Walls with skulls, jelly fish, a cat & mouse, bumble bees and so much more. (read more)

Relient K | 6.2.2009

Relient K, oh Hey! I am just going to get this out of my system right now. Relient K was my first concert, technically speaking. I say my first concert was Chevelle, because it was the first time I was all by myself without an adult figure, but really it was Relient K. I saw them at the Tri-City Arena back in the day and loved every second of it, so I was excited to relive that experience and see them again. I loved how they played the Rocky Theme song (a slightly different version of it) before they came out and then it was like woosh right into a song! No speaking or hellos, it was like the coolest musical slap in the face ever. Relient K has been around for a while and they still put on a super fun rockin' show. (read more)

Laura Gibson | 6.1.2009

There is something about the brick walls with no windows, low ceiling decorated with white Christmas lights, and concrete floor that make the big concert room at the Empyrean Coffee House feel like a secret getaway in the middle of nowhere. Maybe it takes imagination, but whenever I am in that room and the music sounds so clear and sharp I just get wrapped up in the environment and sound that I feel like I am at my very own private show. It's me and the artists, does anyone else ever feel that way there? I hope so, because it is such a cool experience. I love it. (read more)

Elkfest 5 | 5.29-31.2009

Elkfest along with Artfest took over Brownes Addition in Spokane for the weekend. Filling the streets with people of all ages and sorts. It was Spokane's very own mixing pot of chatter, eating, drinking, dancing, and everything in-between. You got to see your old friends, new friends, and probably even make some friends... it was great to meet you John Blakesley! (read more)

James Otto | 5.27.2009

When James Otto took the stage all I could do was just shake my head in awe at how tall he is. He is almost seven feet tall. Like he said women don’t want no Kenny Chesney who is up to his nipples, you want someone who can take care of business. James and his band sounded super clear. They had their shit lined up and it was perfect. I am not the biggest country fan in the world, I do like it, but James Otto had me movin’ my cowboy boots and shakin’ my head during his whole set. He is a ladies man. (read more)

Sasquatch! 2009 | Memorial Day Weekend 2009

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Centrevol & Lady Danville | 5.21.2009

We arrived at Neato Burrito around 9:30pm and the second I heard sound check I knew that they were going to be a cool band to see! Love them! Lady Danville consists of three boys, one on keys, one on guitar, and one on percussion. On top of all the instruments the three of them sing together and have pop vocal harmonies that are sweeter then sunshine and lollipops. There weren’t a lot of people at Neato Burrito but what was cool about that was that the band was still having fun giggling and smiling. (read more)

If I Had, The State of Nature, The City We Live In,
Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk & Flood the Sun | 5.19.2009

Tuesday night started out with a local band known as If I Had. Three kids including a female singer! There were two things that stroke me like a bolt of lighting about this band. Number one the male front-man had a super cool triangle white polka dot mess of a guitar, jealous? I am. (read more)

rocket market

Firepalooza #1 | 5.16.2009

Tonight was the first Firepalooza, 2009 that is. Featuring Rajah and Kim w/Caroline and Patrick from Mon Cheri, Kevin Long and Darin Hilderbrand also known as Just Plain Darin. All of the artists were playing for free and taking donations, I thought that was very kind of them to play on a Saturday night for no cost! Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler and Gloriana | 5.14.2009

For being a country show there weren't a lot of cowboy hats but I have never seen so many kinds of fancy cowgirl boots! The Spokane Arena was filled to capacity with girls of all ages ranging from 4 to 85. It was a great night for mothers and daughters, best friends, and everything in between. There was a huge energy in the crowd as glow-sticks swirled around in the dark and signs floated across the see of people. I felt like last night was one big "Girl's Night Out!" Now there were some gentlemen and some boys there, being the best husbands and boyfriends by taking their girl to see the country princess Taylor Swift. (read more)

MDC

Godbear, Lithium ID, Reason for Existence, Deadones USA,
Embrace the Kill & MDC | 5.12.2009

MDC started 30 years ago and the songs are still relevant today, it amazes Matty and me.  The front man for Millions of Dead Cops reminds me of Iggy Pop, they both are crazy mother fuckers on stage. They put on a wild set, all while the audience was screaming out songs for them to play. paper mache and matthew winters

Mury, Matthew Winters and Paper Mache | 5.9.2009

"You could have been anywhere tonight but you're here with us," says the singer of Mury. That is a great way to open the night out, it is cool for them to say Thank You before they even started to play. The Caterina was full of boys and girls sitting in their chairs all excited for a Saturday night filled with great live music. (read more)

Spokane Babes Of Music | 5.7.2009

Did you know there was a Spokane Babes of Music? I am sure you know there are some babes playing in bands or as a solo act out their in Spokane, but yes there is a group for them! Last night was the Spokane Babes of Music concert featuring Colleen Rice, Kristen Marlo, Cure All Remedy, and Gutterpony all playing together in the new Lions Lair! The show was $5 and the cool thing about the cover was it all went straight to Transitions. (read more)

The Red Elvises | 5.4.2009

What's not to like about a group of kids (I say kids but they were adults) wearing animal print suits and playing surfer rock with a Russian front-man? I mean when do you get that on a Monday night in Spokane? The Red Elvises were a complete blast; Bursting with character, sex appeal, and spunk. (read more)

Karli Fairbanks, Betsy Olson and Sera Cahoone | 4.30.2009

Sera is an Indie Sub Pop Country Queen from Seattle. Her music is very placid and peaceful. There wasn't a single part of her set that I didn't like. Sera even managed to add in a harmonica, she is a woman of many talents. She is very simplistic but manages to make beautiful music that anyone can listen to and enjoy. (read more)

Grand Sequoia, Toy Garden & Matthew Winters | 4.29.2009

There is something so cool about getting to stand on stage while an artist performs. You feel a vibration go through your body every time they pound a kick-drum. Not only do you feel the music but the lights blind the audience out, so all that you are for that time on stage is the artist you are watching. (read more)

Dan Deacon, Future Islands and Teeth Mountain | 4.27.2009

I have never seen the movie Footloose, but I was told that it's about a small town where the kids are not allowed to dance because it is a sin. However one night someone dances and its this new craze (I get the point I should probably see the movie) - well last night Kennewick and the thirty or so kids in the Red Room were the people of Footloose. Kurt Olson, Rajah & Kim and Mon Cheri | 4.25.2009

The Caterina Winery was filled to the top of the wine glass with, as Patrick from Mon Cheri said, “Old friends, New Friends, and Current Friends.” I have only been to the Caterina Winery a handful of times but I have never seen it this full. For $5 you got in the door, $10 got you in and a CD, and $15 got you in, a CD and free drinks! I thought that was a neat way to get people excited to have Mon Cheri’s new CD. (read more)

Skeletonbreath & Space Age Fur | 4.24.2009

I am pissed that I gave up my violin in high school. Anyhow before I get to that, a local Spokane band known as Seafloor Spreading got the night started. Their friends and family filled the Caterina cheering them on before the band even started and continued dancing in their seats and taking photos durinig their set. It’s cool to see that support. Back Row Kings, Overview, Please Draw In Me | 4.23.2009

After playing an intense dice game known as Toss Up, Matty and I headed over to the Caterina Winery for another night of music! The set list consisted of a local pop/rock band, a rock band from San Francisco, and a house/dance band from Spokane. The Back Row Kings took the stage first and their set started with the singer playing the piano and singing by himself, after a few verses the band joined him on stage. That was a cool way to start your set! Now I can't really "review" this band because they were missing their guitar player, and the guitar is an important part to the band. (read more)

Kurt Olson, Fienix, Som Jordan, and Listener | 4.22.2009

Matt and I walked over to the Empyrean for the "From Arkansas With Love Tour" to see some talk music. We were both excited to finally be at a show again since we had four days off... we kinda got used to going out every night. But enough about us because what happened last night at the Empyrean is more than my words will ever be able to describe because the artists words left me speechless. I was floored by how well these guys could all write poetry, or rap, or write songs and just be able to put one word after another without a break and sometimes without a breath of air. acorn project

Acorn Project | 4.17.2009

After indulging in one of the spiciest burritos ever, Matty and I headed down to The Casbah to check out Acorn Project. Honestly I was a little nervous because I have never seen a "jam-band" before and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but, I ended up loving it. When we arrived at The Casbah and read through all the dress codes & rules, got our arms stamped, and all that fun stuff we walked up these narrow stairs and arrived in this swanky dance club complete with two bars, a game room, a "Chill" room, and one big ballroom with a stage. We were a little early so we caught the last part of the bands sound check and grabbed ourselves a drink. (read more)

Mount St. Helens Vietnam Band | 4.16.2009

As I told the bassist after the show "oh my gosh…I mean like holy Jesus." I am still stunned from what I watched on the Empyrean stage last night. It was so fast, creative, out-there, and wah-blam that I didn't know what to do with myself. Round of applause to the lovely lady in the band because she was so cool to watch! She would be up and down playing the floor with drumsticks and beating the drums, playing the keyboard and pounding her tambourine stick like instruments on the ground and shaking them in the air and shreddin' the guitar! Wow! (read more)

The Inlander’s Local Music Issue Release Party | 4.15.2009

Wednesday, April 15th was the Inlander's Local Music Release Party at the Knitting Factory featuring Cure All Remedy, Mon Cheri, The Booze Fighters, and Please Draw In Me. The evening started with Cure All Remedy and them saying “Hopefully if your not a fan you will be by the end of the night.”  Cure All Remedy is this very jazzy rock band featuring a male and female singer along with instruments like a keyboard and a trumpet. The band also features KCDA's Local Lounge producer Matt Loi. (read more)

franz

Franz Ferdinand | 4.13.2009

What's not to like about moving the Franz show to a smaller venue? We were four rows deep in a rustic cool antique theater known as the Moore. As our check it out colleague Jason said “It's not that bad going to concerts in a recession, I mean when else is a band like that going to be in a venue that size?” The Franz show was supposed to be at the Paramount Theater but was moved and we don't know why but we had no problem with it! Matthew Winters | 4.11.2009

Sangria at the Caterina Winery is this little refreshing glass of “awh!” and so was the music Saturday night. Matt and I headed down to the Caterina to see Matthew Winters play with Betty and the Boy and Marshall Mclean. I was in for a few surprises that night, but I will get to that later. The Caterina was lightly filled with people of all ages and types as Matt and I sat at my favorite table there. (read more)

karli

Karli Fairbanks | 4.8.2009

A local show at the Bing Crosby is kind of a big deal, as Karli Fairbanks says “It costs to play here... but you guys made it happen.” Last night was a place where every kid who has ever been to a local show (no matter what kind of music you indulged your ears with) should have been at. It was the CD release show for Karli Fairbanks with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and Kaylee Cole. The night was complete with three very talented bands/artists that filled the Bing with beautiful sounds. (read more)

tesla

Tesla w/ The Leo Project | 4.7.2009

It was a crisp spring evening in the city of Spokavegeas. The buzzing of my cell phone awoke me from quick power nap while watching family guy re runs. When I looked at my phone to check what it was waking me for, across the top it read TESLA 8pm The Knitting Factory. I rubbed my eyes and quickly arose to grab my camera and let my girlfriend know we had a show to go to. (read more)

Jedediah The Pilot, Loom, and Cyrus Fell Down | 4.6.2009

Let me tell ya how interesting it is when you put screaming punk rock kids in an elegant winery known as the Caterina. I am surprised the wine glasses didn't burst into pieces from the loud musical sounds that came from Jedediah the Pilot, Loom, and Cyrus Fell Down. Not once have I seen so much sweat fly off the bodies of artists at a show. I was impressed and it was something I wasn't expecting on Monday, April 6th. (read more)

Huey Lewis and The News | 4.4.2009

The Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum was 90% full of moms, dads, students, one ginger kid, oh and me. I thought I wasn’t that familiar with Huey Lewis but oh man let me tell ya I knew all the hits… including both of his Back to Future songs (okay really I only knew 1 – “The Power of Love”). As Matt said “Yeah we went back to the future… we went back to 1985.” (read more)

Small Town Nation, From Ritual To Romance, Starting Over, From The Top, Good Kids Bad Ideas | 4.3.2009

I put on my converses and headed over to Spokane's only punk rock venue called The Cretin Hop. As soon as Jason, Matt, and I walked in we were greeted with a “this must be your first time in here,” by the very cool owner T.C.. The walls of the Cretin Hop are covered with DIY artwork, Ramone's posters & stickers, monster heads, skulls, and pretty much anything punk rock – including a Social D blanket and Misfits flag. This place is almost too cool for Spokane; I was excited to see that we have our own little CBGB now! (read more)

english beat

The English Beat | 4.1.2009

“The last time we were hear I told everyone to bring a friend, the one or two you have…” the crowd chuckles. Matt chimes in “I brought a friend…I brought you (he said to me).” This was my first English Beat concert, Matt saw them once before with Dave and they said they had a blast! I must say the show was a lot of fun; the band was full of energy and had huge smiles it was like a punk ska big band. (read more)

Wig Bash 2009 | 3.28.2009

Anytime I hear someone talk about a SHIM concert the first thing I hear is the lights when you see them live are awesome, and by golly they were. It was about 1am by the time SHIM took the stage with their strobe lights, bright triangle lights, and smoke machines. They rocked the last performance on the Blvd stage like they were at a sold out arena show in New York City. They were fast moving pure Rock music from Seattle; these boys knew how to put on a good show. (read more)

blue october

Blue October & Ours | 3.28.2009

The Blue October background was awesome, it was the cover of their new album “Approaching Normal”… which is a window with a little girl on the other side. They made the window huge on a screen and added real curtains, it looked sharp. They had these cool blue light pillars too during the stage set up. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting them to sound as good as they did. The three songs I saw were amazing; they sound great and their new songs fucking rock live. (read more)

Lost Trailers & The Copper Mountain Band | 3.27.2009

The Lost Trailers opened with “Holler Back” and the crowd went crazy dancing and signing. Their "Holler Back" song is way better than the No Doubt singers “Holler Back Girl”.

Both bands were great at Big Al’s. They both had great fun and interaction with the crowd. To bad the Gonzaga Men’s Basketball team was playing in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament at the same time. More people should have been at this show. (read more)

The Blakes w/ Godbear & Good Kids Bad Ideas | 3.27.2009

Friday night was to be the last Friday night at the Blvd. It’s really sad that the City of Spokane decided to tear down the Blvd building to make it a parking lot – way to go kids! But the Blvd isn’t going away they are moving up the street to the old Zombie Room. So, don’t worry kids you will have plenty of new rails and walls to sticker and there will be lots of new shows just in a smaller new location which is better than not having a Blvd at all. Enough of my whining the first band to play was Good Kids Bad Ideas. (read more)

Plain White T's | 3.26.2009

If a ticket says the show starts at 8pm it needs to start at 8pm. Matt and I arrived at the Knitting Factory at 7:45pm to see the Plain White T’s, Danger Radio, and Verdera rock the house at 8pm but when we walked up the hallway to get into the venue I heard music and Verdera had started 30minutes early –wtf? Anyhow so we caught the last few songs of Verdera and got ready for Danger Radio! (read more)

K.D. Lang

K.D. Lang w/ The Wood Brothers | 3.21.2009

Saturday night K.D. Lang came to the FOX Theater in Spokane for the first time since 1985, that was before I was born and on that note I was the youngest person there by far. The Wood Brothers opened up for the night and they were extremely talented brothers from Georgia and upstate New York. One played the guitar and sang while the other rocked a harmonica and a stand up bass. It is always a treat to see someone talented play a stand up bass because it is such a physical instrument. dominik bar band

Dominik Bar Band | 3.20.2009

“Hello, I’m Not An Airplane…” the crowd chuckles, and before us sat not an airplane but a barefooted red head with a Ghostbusters Trucker Hat on and a guitar in his lap. I was very excited to see him play some music at the Empyrean and so was he, he mentioned how Spokane was his favorite place to tour then he pauses and says well maybe not Spokane but the Empyrean is my favorite. This singer/songwriter from Sacramento was relaxed and talented with some great lyrics. (read more)

Garage Voice & Noah and Abby Gundersen | 3.19.2009

Thursday night we headed off to the Caterina Winery to see Seattle Band Garage Voice with friends Noah and Abby Gundersen from Centralia, Washington. This was the first time I have been to the Caterina Winery and the Christmas lights, candles, and warm coloring throughout the space was the perfect environment for both of these bands – not to mention the giant papier-mâché moon hanging over the right side of the stage. Brett Dennen w/ Angus & Julia Stone | 3.16.2009

The crowd was full of adults, kids, and peeps – some who could dance like they were auditioning for “So You Think You Can Dance” while their friends just stand next to them still; and some who were young enough that their mom were four people behind them ready to cry because their little girl was growing up. It was a great crowd both entertaining, romantic, and sweet.  After a beer Matt realized that Brett Dennen was way cooler then Brett Michaels and that he could probably get more tang, and I would have to agree with that… probably a better musician too. Chase Long Beach | 3.8.2009

Chase Long Beach HAD a rough day after getting up early, catching at ferry at 7am, dealing with crossing the border, a tire blowout, a broken toe, and no sleep they arrived to Spokane! For having such a shitty day they fucking rocked the empyrean – and the thirty some people there! It was a blast; their drummer played like Animal from the Muppets. (read more)

Reinkaos, Character Flaw & Sword To Sunrise | 3.7.2009

Nothing describes a metal show in Spokane like slutty bartenders, testosterone, teenage mommies, moms, and head banging! The first band to take stage for the night was From Sword to Sunrise. It was everything I expected heavy sounds and growling into a microphone. For being Metal though, it sounded pretty damn good. As Matt said "I'd be pissed if I knew Secondhand Serenade had a bigger crowd then my metal show did, when the metal band sounds way better." (read more)

blind pilot

Blind Pilot & Kevin Long | 3.6.2009

Finally after a long set up due to sound checking 9 instruments Blind Pilot took the stage. By this point the Empyrean was a sea of stemless wine glasses and beer bottles. There was horns, banjos, xylophones, drums, guitars and more that filled the room with a wonderful sound. (read more)

Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry, Papa Roach | 2.9.09

Papa Roach owned the night in my opinion... it looked like the band was having the time of their life and that makes such a difference in their performance. The main singer constantly had a smile on his face and made sure to cover every inch of the fucking stage... and if that wasn't enough he got off the stage walked on the floor and hopped over the barrier to the seats.
