Folk? Meet Jazz
It was a Thursday night in Lilac City when I set out to The Caterina Winery to see two artists that I had never seen live and was vaguely familiar with.
First up was a folk-jazz trio led by Nate Greenburg. Folk-Jazz. Yeah…I didn’t know it even existed. The group was definitely enjoying their time jamming together. At one point they were a little all over the place, but were able to hold it together. This led to a comment from a very humble Greenburg claiming “Hey we’re jazz musicians…so we kinda like to B.S. our way through things.”
Improv or not, Nate Greenburg has put together a trio of very talented musicians. Nate’s style is very unique. He mixes folk, jazz and even a little flamenco in to his songs. His take on Neil Young’s “Down By The River” was one of the more notable points of the night. Nate took Neil’s song and made it his own using his flamenco style and very dark raspy vocals.
Next up was Austin & The Morningside. Traditionally a three piece, but tonight included a mandolin player, Austin & The Morningside kicked off the set with an instrumental to get the crowd in the mood.
About three songs into the set Austin played the title track from his recent EP (which by the way is only 5 bucks) “Lately I’ve Loved You”. This is where Austin really showed his talents for song writing and performance. While his style of vocals are little whispery…they fit.
Austin Davis is a very, very humble musician who writes songs about things that are happening on his life. Songs about falling in love. Songs about having children. Songs that this journalist believes all people can relate to.
The group held the crowds attention throughout the entire performance. The moment Austin strums his guitar, you’re hooked. Poppy Folk chords and lyrics make this one band to check out for yourself.
