I am pissed that I gave up my violin in high school. Anyhow before I get to that, a local Spokane band known as Seafloor Spreading got the night started. Their friends and family filled the Caterina cheering them on before the band even started and continued dancing in their seats and taking photos durinig their set. It’s cool to see that support.
Five minutes before sound check Matt is like “This is going to be really loud!” and sure enough it was! What stood out most to me about Seafloor Spreading was that they did not have a bass player… but the coolest part was it still sounded like there was a bass. That’s talent.
When they opened their set the first drummer hopped out from behind his drums and sang a few words, but as far as singing goes that was all we heard from the band the rest of the night.
They are all talented musicians because not only were they playing their own instruments really well, but one guitar player switched to play drums and the drummer went to play the guitar.
I also really like the cool guitar that one of the guys had because at the very top of the neck ( I don’t know the terminology too well of a guitar) the part with all the knobs it was split like a V, anyhow it looked badass. They three guys rocked out for a little bit and it was a great transition into Skeletonbreath who was up next.
How can a punk-ish band not have a guitar? It’s simple… replace the instrument for a mini scaled down one called a violin and poof… it’s Skeletonbreath! Before I try not to go on and on about this band I have to tell you how refreshing it is to see something so different from anything else I have ever seen, I loved it! Not only did it sound cool but it looked cool, these guys were working it.
Not only do these Brooklyn/Philly boys have a cool band name but when the drummer would introduce song names and chit chat, he sounded like a French goth vampire. It was pretty hot. The drummer also managed to rock a glockenspiel and if you don’t know I love glockenspiels (some day I am going to play one in a band)!
There were no vocals in Skeletonbreath, which fine-tuned out every single sound that came off the bass, violin, and drums. Their sound was punk, but it was also like a tango I am not even sure how to describe it. If I was brave enough I probably would’ve got up and danced – kind of wanted to!
The band asked if there was a place, they could stay that night because they didn’t have anywhere too sleep, the fine people of Spokane came out, and they got a few offers – that must be the adventurous part of a tour.
They ended their set covered in sweat with a song named after a cat “Louise.” I had no idea that you could head bang and jump around and still manage to play the violin like you are in the grand symphony. After the show I asked the violin player if he was ever first chair and sure enough he was in 12th grade!
And, there you have it one of the coolest bands I have seen all year and very one of a kind (plus they like sushi from Seattle) Brooklyn’s very own Skeletonbreath (when you read there name say it like a French vampire it’s fun)!
They night ended with Spokane’s own Space Age Fur. Which I thought was so appropriate for the Caterina because of the big moon hanging down from the ceiling and their name has Space in it… yep!
The first thing I noticed was that the guitar player had a knee brace on, but he was still holding a very big guitar and playing it well. That is dedication.
Half way through their set, the guitar player and the bass player switched instruments. I am not a musician by any means but to know how to play more then one instrument is pretty nifty.
The three boys had a young fun sound to them. I would like to see them again because their set was short and it was late plus it seemed like they were having a rough night. I can imagine standing up and rocking an instrument with a knee brace on would be tough though, but like a lot of bands in Spokane they stick to it and play no matter what the circumstances are!
Overall, the night was a fun; it was an intimate show that had sprinkles of people all there to see a certain band play and people were having a good time which means someone’s doing something right.
