Sonic Youth
Friday, July 24th The Knitting Factory Concert House

sonic youthNo Wave

Friday Night the Knitting Factory was full of the people in Spokane that I would sit in a bar with and start talking about music at noon and it would be Midnight before I knew it and we would still be fighting over if “Daydream Nation” or “Goo” was a better Sonic Youth album. To this day I will still say “Daydream Nation”.

The fact that Sonic Youth was playing in town was a big deal to me and the fact that I was able to take photos of the show for this website just made me more excited then a kid on Christmas Morning. I actually gave up the chance to go to Seattle a day early and see The Jesus Lizard and Built to Spill for this opportunity. I must say it was totally worth it. The show rocked and Sonic Youth is one of the best live bands around (has been for the past 30 years).

After I was done with taking photos of the first three songs I took out my ear plugs and enjoyed the loud precise greatness that is Sonic Youth.

Distortion and feedback so never sounded so appropriate and awesome.

Every time I looked at the crowd they were either really into the show or their jaws were on floor in awe because Sonic Youth was playing in

Spokane. You could stand anywhere in the Knitting Factory and feel like you were really close to the stage. It really is a great venue for live music.

The set was full of old and new songs complete with two encores. “Antenna” is one of my favorite new Sonic Youth songs.

I'm excited to see them tomorrow in Seattle with The Gossip and The Thermals if their show is anything like tonight then I'm in for a treat once again.

Trucker Dave went to the Sonic Youth show with me and here are his thoughts:

There were several factors as to why I needed to attend the Sonic Youth show at The Knitting Factory. I saw them open for REM in '95. Opening bands never get their due, and the crowd couldn't have cared less. I was thrilled. Then in 2006, I had tickets to a club show they were playing in the middle of nowhere (close to where I lived). I was beside myself! Fate stepped in and I busted my foot. I wasn't going anywhere much less nowhere. Now, 2009: Sonic Youth, Spokane. Thank You God! The magnificent desolation, the wall of fuzz, 30 years of not giving a damn about what sells and what doesn't. The show was, in itself, the perfect storm. Sonic Youth (Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo, and Steve Shelly) were part of the NYC "No Wave" scene in the 70's.  They bridged the gap between The Velvet Underground and Punk. They rallied through newer music of which I was not familiar, but was nonetheless captured by it.

Personally I would have liked to heard “Dirty Boots " or "Cool Thing" or "Bull In The Heather" but hey, I'll take what I could get.
