3.7.2009 - The Knitting Factory - Spokane, Washington

rein kaosMarch Metal Madness

Nothing describes a metal show in Spokane like slutty bartenders, testosterone, teenage mommies, moms, and head banging! The first band to take stage for the night was From Sword to Sunrise. It was everything I expected heavy sounds and growling into a microphone. For being Metal though, it sounded pretty damn good. As Matt said "I'd be pissed if I knew Secondhand Serenade had a bigger crowd then my metal show did, when the metal band sounds way better." I was surprised that when they started their second song "Angels Will Fall" the singer truly had a good voice under that screaming, adding another plus in my book! I did enjoy the simultaneous head banging... I was also a little jealous of both the bass and guitar player’s long pretty hair - wonder what product they use? Anyhow the crowd was having a good time, and the band is on tour so keep a look out for From Sword to Sunrise.

burnt offeringsBy the time the second band hit the stage my ears were ringing and I was just excited as hell to see what March Metal Madness had in store for me next! It was Burnt Offerings (with backward R's) and a chick singer for the opening song named Lola. Lola did you honestly think it was necessary to display your cell phone case on the front of your jeans? Did ya really think you were going to take a call while you were on stage? I mean come on... it looked as bad as your singing was, it just isn't meant for metal. Once the boys took over it didn't sound half bad. And even Metal shows use the purple/blue lights for their "slower" songs.

charcter flawBand three has a following in Spokane and by far brought the biggest crowd in! They are Character Flaw - dun dun dun (I added that part in). Their set was complete with 4 lighters, chicks fighting over t-shirts like they were a bride’s bouquet, and hell yeahs. Matt thought they only did that at rap shows, I thought we were at a metal show? I will say Character Flaw threw out CD's and T-Shirts to the crow during their set which was very cool and something I have never seen done before. He even got a metal crowd to giggle by beat boxing and saying that was for the kids they like rap but came anyways. It was a fun set and they were a cool metal band - you can buy their shirts in different colors too so you do not completely match other fans.

To end the evening with some more intense singing - Reinkaos took the stage! Reinkaos fans were just as big as Character Flaw fans; the whole bar was full of Reinkaos T-Shirts. The best ones by far said FUCK EMO on the back with Reinkaos on the front, now that's metal! By this point Matt said "Fuck Irish music, March is all about the metal..." 30 seconds later "well unless Dropkick or Flogging Molly is in town." It was badass and a little scary when the singer Nate came out with a silver Michael mask on - now that's pretty "metal" too. Reinkaos was loud, intense, and everything I expected, props to all the singers for being able to scream/sing like they do - that's what makes metal METAL!sword to sunrise

$8 bucks, 6 beers, 4 bands, and 2 lesbians later we left March Metal Madness. Matt's night was complete when he saw two cougar lesbians making out and mine was complete when we got to his apartment and two gay men were walking in the door with a chocolate penis cake (complete with white frosting on the tip)! It was quite the evening, and I recommend if you get a chance grab your friends and check out a local Spokane metal show when you can - your jaw won't drop so much in one night ever again.
