Do you ever feel the excitement of knowing you have a present but you can’t open it until your Birthday? That feeling is what I have felt for weeks about Terrain; I was counting down the days. Finally Friday October 2nd came; I threw on my 80’s dress and walked up a few blocks to catch the party with Matt, Dave, and Merc.
When we arrived around 6-ish there was a steady crowd of people. The walls were vastly covered in art; local art by artists that were our age. It was a lot to look at and it was refreshing that it all wasn’t the same. People have different tastes and I think they did a great job covering that.
Aside from the art hanging on walls or from the ceiling they also had a few rooms you could check out. One room was painted red where an artist had covered it with found objects and turned it into art. Another room was a video room where you could watch short flicks. You could head upstairs and enjoy $3 drinks to the right or to the left check out artwork.
The whole layout and thoughts behind Terrain is very hip and clean. The crowd’s age seemed to vary from 18 to 60. It was nice that you could come and go throughout the night too. We were able to check out another gallery and enjoy a few drinks at Far West. Terrain definitely helped boost business at surrounding local businesses for the night. Plus with there being no cover we could buy more drinks, cheers!
Aside from the creative art Terrain also showcased area musicians. We managed to catch Olive Green Anna (Spokane), Nick (Spokane), and Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside (Portland). Olive Green Anna has this sweet soft voice and casually plays the guitar; she was the perfect start to the night.
It is always a treat to see her play by herself or with other local musicians like Karli Fairbanks. I haven’t seen Nick yet. It reminded me of Beck. It was mixed in with different sounds and slightly dance but rockin’. Fit the scene like a glove. Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside was vintage and adorable. The music was great for dancing, even break dancing. Sallie had the coolest glasses and a great outfit that complimented her retro band that sounded fantastic. Distinct vocals and just her cute little self won over the crowd.
We also caught poets and break dancers which only added to the whole night. We got a taste of what the youth and young adults of Spokane are doing. This was a chance to show off who we are and what we like. It was a great time to get to know some new faces and chat with others in a once a year setting. A big thanks to everyone who set this up and all of the artists, musicians, poets, dancers, volunteers.
It was a great night you all did a FANTASTIC job, so great that I wish happened more then once a year! Then again it leaves me counting down till next year’s big sha-bang
