Paving Paradise
Friday night was to be the last Friday night at the Blvd. It’s really sad that the City of Spokane decided to tear down the Blvd building to make it a parking lot – way to go kids! But the Blvd isn’t going away they are moving up the street to the old Zombie Room. So, don’t worry kids you will have plenty of new rails and walls to sticker and there will be lots of new shows just in a smaller new location which is better than not having a Blvd at all. Enough of my whining the first band to play was Good Kids Bad Ideas.
Alright they looked so young I am almost sure there balls hadn’t dropped yet. Their first song didn’t sound so good either, and I was about to write down on my note pad that they were horrible but then… they said a very funny comment “So everybody should drink lots of beer so we sound better.” The one singer explained that all three singers were sick, and then the guitar player chirped in (who was singing a little) and mentioned that he wasn’t supposed to be singing and that the kid on bass was (who couldn’t even talk due to his throat sickness) and that the kid playing the bass normally doesn’t play the bass! They were even missing a member! Wow-za’s I was a little confused but I could understand then – they kept repeating don’t judge us tonight go to our Myspace and listen to us there, that’s how we really sound. Well I went to their Myspace and it was cool and what I would have expected to see live. To make things worse for their set the drummer broke his drums so they had to stop playing early. I understand bands have off nights – so I can’t say anything bad about these kids, in fact kudo’s to them for actually playing in those circumstances. I can’t wait to see them play when they are healthy, all together, and playing the right instruments!
Godbear was up next and all I have to say about this local Spokane band is that they are loud and fast. They had a flaming ginger haired singer with a mustache who wore sunglasses the whole night and sang vocals; they also had a fast drummer, bass player, and a guitar player – equaling four loud musicians. Even though my ears were ringing it was cool – they had a following and people were diggin’ it. The crowd laughed when the band mentioned that they weren’t used to not having anyone up front but immediately the crowd screamed “we’re drinking!” It was all ages so you had to drink in the bar which was about 20 feet away from the stage. Godbear soon chattered back that “I guess were alcoholics that or we normally play in bars!” They had a song about a mentally retarded sex offender with good skin – no comment. At the end of their set the singer made the guitar player turn off his guitar to tell the crowd one very important piece of advice “Never ever ever ever ever trust someone who has a better moustache than you – I’m serious.” And that was it – goodnight to Godbear!
Finally it was time for the band that I came to see play, one of my favoritest local Seattle bands –The Blakes! I have seen the boys before and this time it still rocked but there was a female on keyboards, now that’s interesting! The band was cool before their set, they hung out in the bar and the drummer chattered with all sorts of people – even me (I tried not to starf*ck him). As soon as they started to play about 10 people threw down their beers and ran to the front of the stage. I soon followed after chugging the other half of my 24 oz. PBR. They sounded amazing and they played my favorite songs “Two Times,” “Don’t Bother Me,” “Pistol Grip,” “Vampire,” and plenty other fun tracks. The 15 of us up at the stage clapped our hands and danced around like a bunch of crazy “Lord of the Flies” children making it a wonderful night and a lot of fun. Don’t bother me during a Blakes show it’s a blast and they are an awesome band – go see them they play, they tour all over the place! |
