Pablo Trucker, Karli Fairbanks, and The Toy Garden
Saturday, June 27th at the Empyrean Coffee House

Saturday night after Hoopfest everyone was a little beat in more ways the one. Pablo Trucker mentioned how their singer played with his "boys" (who were in the back of the Empyrean) known as the Seattle Super Sonics. Things didn't go too well and as he said "there's gotta be a loser”. Tired from playing he still managed to put on a great set with his band.

During their set we got to experience a band meeting and sound-check the boys saying if you just want to listen to our music we have CD's available. It was actually very funny. This Seattle three piece had rich alt-country vocals mixed with rockin' tunes creating a great live band. It was cool to see the singer throw his body/emotions into his guitar after playing outside in the heat all day. Even the drummer mixed it up and used some glass bottles as drums plus was able to play a glockenspiel too.

karli fairbanksThe band managed to play one slow song, a bunch of rockin ones, and a cover by Spokane's very own Power Und Beauty. I would love to see them again they were musically entertaining and they made me giggle.

Karli Fairbanks consistently puts on a good show. Every time we get the chance to see her she puts on an smooth set, band or not. Tonight we got the pleasure of seeing her with her band which also includes local singer songwriter Henry Nordstrom. It was very sweet, her dad was out of town on Fathers Day when she played at the Rocket Market so she dedicated a song for him (he was in the front row). She dedicated a cover by Bonnie Raitt to him, as she mentioned how her dad loves when she sings her music. I thought it was dead on, it looked good. Anna joined her on stage to sing "Whiskey Flowers" which is an older song and I have come to the conclusion that it is one of my favorite. Once again it was a pleasure to see Karli and by the sounds of it I think there will be a new EP in the future.

The Toy Garden got up on stage and played a new song first because they were sick of playing the CD and then played their new album from front to back. Everything sounded good and "Citylights" is my favorite track. The CD was available for $5 and will be on iTunes soon for $6.

the toy gardenThe band mentioned since it was $1 PBR night if you bought the CD tonight it is like you are getting a FREE PBR... in a sense. Then they had a great idea that if you bought a CD on-line they would mail a PBR 40. Great idea, as long as you don't have to pay shipping. Good music, good beer what's not to like.

The Toy Garden stands out in the music scene to me because of Will's vocals they are a bit distorted and with the electronic beats thrown in with the heavy rock it mixes like a good drink. I can't wait to listen to the CD in my car and I look forward to hearing more new music from this band.
