The Tubes
Pig Out at The Park. 9/6/09

the tubesWhite Punks!

YAY! The Tubes! This was by far the best show of this year’s Pig Out In The Park; Spokane’s way of acknowledging the sin of gluttony. Fee Waybill and crew braved the late afternoon wind storm/downpour and turned out a good set of classic Tubes tunes.

I saw The Tubes back in 1983, and it was my first experience with rock and roll as theater or better yet, spectacle. What I have always loved about The Tubes is that there has always been an element of "The Emperor has no clothes" sense about them. What I mean by this that they (The Tubes) managed to slice through all of the bullshit and show everybody the sleazy side of life while giving you a wink and a smile.

The Tubes came out of the San Francisco music scene of the late 60's, and that’s where the hippy "peace and love" comparisons end. The band skewered topics such as mass culture, The American Dream and consumerism. There has always been a great smart-ass element to this band and if you didn’t get the joke well then, too bad. They sounded great, a few notes missed here and there but hey, Fee waybill is almost 60.

The Tubes were in thier heyday in the 80's with such hits as "She’s A Beauty" "Talk To Ya Later" and "I Dont Want to Wait Anymore". There couldnt have been a band more suited for the MTV generation. I was thrilled to hear these gems live again.

The cherry on top for me was when the drunken 7foot tall platinum hair train wreck known as Quay Lewd (AKA Fee Waybill) staggered out to bless us with the rock classic "White Punks on Dope”

So, all in all a great show, lots of laughs and to sum up The Tubes, they'll give you every penny's worth but, it will cost you a dollar first.
