Heir To The Folk Thrown
Once again Matt and I find ourselves in the golden glow of the gorgeous Martin Woldson Fox Theater. The lights are set perfectly, the instruments have been tuned with care, and the speakers were ready to fill the room with smooth music.
Tonight Matt and I had the pleasure of seeing a new band we had not heard of The Picture, and one we both knew well The Wallflowers. Brooklyn's The Picture started the evening out with an awkward silence and smoothly transitioned into a set of chill indie rock. Their music reminded me of a flock of blue birds flying over cities with many stories to tell and questions to be answered.
Together the five boys on stage were relaxed and there to play music. It was cool to see how some of the boys would move around on stage swapping instruments and mics, it was a group effort and you don't always see that in a band. They have this sweet suave sound that was mellow enough but fun enough to make you move in your seat. The audience was full of all ages, family's, couples, and friends and as I glanced around everyone seemed to love this band. I would say The Picture can make any music lovers eardrums happy. I am extremely delighted I had the pleasure to see this band and since they have come to Spokane for their first time, hopefully they will venture back across the states for another visit in the future. When they do, I will see you there.
Being the son of Bob Dylan explains part of the reason why Jakob is so talented. I am sure he picked up his own quirks but how cool to have such a big musical icon as your father. When The Wallflowers took the stage the audience chattered and clapped with excitement. Jakob with his guitar and his hat, he had this calm sophisticated stance that carried through his music. Not a single note was off, and everyone was on key the set was skillfully played by the whole band. I was impressed with their friendship between the band, in between songs they would compliment each other and laugh.
When a girl in the audience yelled "I love you" Jakob bounced back with the love needs to be equally spread throughout the band. He was casually funny on stage. It was a very intimate night of music. There was a lot of crowd interaction between them and the band. At one point one of the employees of the Fox went up to a lady in the front and told her to put away her camera. As soon as the song finished Jakob asked the lady what had happened. After she explained it to the whole theater, he told her that you can take pictures of him. If he bugs you again tell him to talk to me. I thought that was great. After that you could hear all the snapping of the cameras. Jakob even stopped his set to let two young kids come up to the stage and take their photo with the band in the background. I like to see these things happen at concerts because it shows that the band truly cares that you are having a good time at the show and that they are not just there to make a buck.
After the first few notes of "One Headlight" everyone in the audience stood up and started to dance, clap, sing along. The night was full of good music that sounded perfect and was fun to listen too and that is what a concert should be about.
