We were so excited to catch Hey is for Horses we have been trying to make it happen for quite some time and it just never worked out but we quickly ran in and we caught the end of their set. Check this out they have a singer, then John who also sings and like raps (but not gangsta rap) while he plays instruments and a harmonica. It is such a cool mix; the blonde male (I am sorry I do not know your name) had these strong vocals that mixed well with the bands twangy indie rock folk. I am so bad with genres. It was hard to not want to get up and dance around. Harmonicas make me feet want to boogie.
The music is fun to listen too however the lyrics are rich as well. My plan is to catch a full set, I really enjoy their sound it is unique from the rest of the scenes – which is good! Plus how can you not love the band name? Hey is for Horses!!!!
Joe Firstman. He took over the stage and would face the crowd to play his guitar then turn and face the wall and rock some keys. He had a very chill personality and was very relaxing. Definitely an acoustic musician with loving words. It was so quite in the room that when he was playing I could hear him tap his feet; that is just one of those quirks about live shows that really make them one of a kind.
At first he said he had an alien cave effect on the microphone and was going for a more summertime park effect. I didn’t notice the alien sound but I do agree with him that he would sound lovely in a park in the summer time. At the end White Buffalo joined him on stage for one final ditty. He was a cool kid (adult).
I kept trying to dig up where the name “White Buffalo” came from but horses and buffalo go well together. When his set began he took over the sound in the room with his rustic vocals and acoustic guitar. At the end of one of his songs he commented on how the sound of steaming milk sounded nice; a wonderful quality of a coffee concert house.
I decided that during some of his songs he would kind of get louder and progress deeper, I felt like a Buffalo was charging my ear buds but without a riot more gracefully. That is my take on his name I am sure it is off but I would like to think that is why he is know as White Buffalo. He made us laugh with a song about falling in love with a hooker and he did tell the kids in the front row that he tried to keep the show clean. It added a laughable effect.
It was a warm night of music at the Empyrean all the bands transitioned really well into each other and I know that two of them are out on the road so if they are near your home, get out and see them, it will be a nice evening out. You will have to come to Spokane for Hey is For Horses but while you are here you can see our garbage eating goat; seems to be a big hit with music fans.
